DQX - Witch greichel

Beltro is a character in Dragon Quest X. He is a demonified Wetling, and the second-in-command and right-hand man to Archfiend Valeria.

Biography[]

Beltro's first appearance was in the cinematic intro for Version 5, riding alongside Valeria during her initial invasion of Astoltia. When Shaka sabotaged Valeria's army by detonating their supply wagons, he is shown whispering something to her, likely advising her to call off the invasion and retreat, which she did.

After Valeria turned away the Hero and Shaka when they tried to convince her to go to Demon Mountain so that a new Great Demon King could be selected, he gave the pair a clue that led them to the location of Valeria's secret orphanage, saying that it might help them convince her to change her mind. After the incident at the orphanage that led to its destruction and the death of Valeria's lieutenant Jair, Valeria finally agrees to go to Demon Mountain to become the next Great Demon King. Beltro thanks Shaka and the Hero in secret, saying that he was opposed to trying to re-invade Astoltia in their current state after their first failed attempt.

When the trials to decide the next Great Demon King began at Demon Mountain, Valeria ordered Beltro and her entourage of Valdistan soldiers to wait at the entrance for her return, but against her orders, Beltro and the soldiers snuck their way in and attempted to sabotage the other participants to give Valeria an edge. When they were exposed, Valeria angrily attacked her own soldiers for not having faith in her, scaring them into running away along with Beltro.

Beltro is seen again when he and Valeria were investigating the miasmound in Gerhena Fields, on the border of Valdista's territory, bumping into the Hero and Illusia. He was also with Valeria when she and a small group of soldiers went to Gora to take Illusia with them after learning of her ability to dispel demon miasma, but were stopped by the arrival of Shaka and Nagene, who took her for themselves. Angered, Valeria ordered her soldiers to begin marching on Shaka's nation of Farazade, while Beltro mumbled to himself, wondering if he would survive the impending war between the nations of the Netherworld.

After the brief war between the Netherworld nations ended, Valeria had gone missing in the aftermath, leading to Valdista falling into a state of total anarchy. Beltro, as Valeria's second-in-command, was the de-facto leader, but lacking Valeria's overwhelming power to keep the citizens in check, refused to assume leadership. When the Hero and Illusia came to offer help in rebuilding the nation, Beltro recruited them into helping him search for Valeria, refusing to believe that she was dead. Their search led them to the quiet village of Topol north of Zexus, where they found Valeria, now turned into a child and assuming the name Tila. Beltro immediately suspected the girl was Valeria, and plotted to get her back into action, whether she liked it or not. He accomplished this by leaking his location to the Gannon Brothers, a pair of sadistic monsters who had been banished from Valdista by Valeria, knowing that they had been searching for him to kill him and take over Valdista for themselves. Beltro did this knowing that they would attack the village, thereby forcing Valeria to come back and defend it. Just as he predicted, the events that unfurled led to Tila coming back as Valeria, as well as the deaths of the Gannon Brothers, killing two birds with one stone.

After the incident in Topol Village, Valeria returned to Valdista and immediately brought an end to the anarchy with a show of overwhelming force. Beltro thanked the Hero for their help, saying that while Valeria exhibits the power and leadership needed to run a violent nation like Valdista and keep it in check, her hidden inner kindness and purity would leave her vulnerable in crucial times, which is why a cunning old man like himself has to support her from the shadows.

Personality[]

Beltro is a cunning man, preferring to avoid conflict and combat unless victory with minimal losses is guaranteed. He is also a bit lazy, avoiding responsibility as much as possible, and always trying to look for the quickest or simplest solution to any problem.

He is completely loyal to Valeria, to the point that he searched the entire Netherworld for her after her disappearance rather than assume she was dead. Sometimes he is overeager to please her or make her life more convenient, as shown when he defied her orders to wait outside the Demongate during the trials to select the next Great Demon King to try and sabotage the other participants. He had also earned Valeria's trust to the point that she left him in charge of the orphanage when its director suffered a back injury, making him the only person she ever revealed the orphanage's existence to.

Beltro's cunning often skirts the lines of morality, such as when he lured the Gannon Brothers to Topol Village in order to force Valeria to come back as ruler of Valdista, or pretending to join a rebel group that wanted to overthrow the Hero after they become the Great Demon King, and later joking that he considered joining them for real.
