Big Banga (Big Banger when spoken aloud) is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series. Its elemental nature varies between titles, but it is always a skill of prodigious strength when used.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest VI[]
Making its debut, it is learned by Mercury at level 14, as well as mastering the Liquid Metal Slime vocation. It deals 300~400 fire breath damage to all enemies and costs 30 MP to use.
Dragon Quest VII[]
Acting the same as in VI, it can only be learned by characters that master the Platinum King Jewel vocation in the original PSX version of the game, costing 30 MP to use once again.
- In the 3DS remake, reaching rank 7 of the Druid and rank 6 of the Hero vocations will also unlock the skill. It is also used by Darkonium slimes in battle.
Dragon Quest VIII[]
Yangus can use Big Banga as a scythe technique after allocating 100 skill points into the Scythe skill tree. It's strength is dependent on Yangus' level: prior to level 55, it will deal 175~225 Frizz damage to all enemies. Once the brazen bandit surpasses the benchmark, the skill will deal 300~400 damage. Both parameter sets require 30 MP to be used once again, and are affected by Yangus' tension level. It is also a Deathmove for Hori, Nohi, Sugi, and/or Tori in a Monster Team.
Dragon Quest IX[]
Big Banga can be used by any character that has the Hardcore Hammering (quest #82) item in their inventory. The skill is of the Darkness element this time around, and will deal 240~360 fixed damage when used. It costs only 16 MP to use this time, and will affect all enemies.
Dragon Quest X[]
Learned when 120 skill points are invested in the Greatsword skill line from 2.1 onwards, it deals around 600 Fire attribute damage to enemies within range. Its power increases with the players' strength, and deals about 800 damage. It costs 6 MP and is also used by the Big rockbomb in battle. It can also be enhanced with Master Orb jewels from the later part of 3.0 onwards and can also be learned by recruited Golems and Killing machines when 12 skill points are invested into their secret Greatsword skill tree. In the Offline version of the game, it is a Coup de Grâce that is learned by investing 11 skill points into the Hero's Greatsword skill tree when in the Warrior and Gladiator vocations, as well as 14 skill points into Hussar's Greatsword skill tree.
Dragon Quest XI[]
Learned by the Luminary after investing 16 skill points into the Luminary Character Builder after his powers reawaken, it deals a maximum of 330 fire attribute damage on a single enemy group. It costs 24 MP to use, and is also used by the Restless Knight and King of Metal king slimes against the Luminary and his allies.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2/Joker 2 Professional[]
Dragon Quest Heroes & Dragon Quest Heroes II[]
Big Banga is Nera's Coup de Grace. The finisher works best when used in conjunction with the creature corralling Maelstrom for tighter group efficiency.
Dragon Quest of the Stars[]
One of the Sword of Ramias's skills, it is a 380% potency Frizz-type attack that targets all enemies.
Dragon Quest Tact[]
Appearing as Nera's Coup de Grace once again, it deals major Bang-type spell damage to all enemies in area of effect, costing 137 MP to use and is activated after 4 turns.
Dragon Quest Treasures[]
Learned by King slimes and Magmantes, it acts the same as in previous appearances and costs 8 MP to use.
Behind the scenes[]
When Plus-Alpha localised DQVIII, the skill was given a curious vowel ending. This is reflective of the Cockney accent that Yangus speaks with in the western localisation, and the change has stuck ever since.
Etymology[]
Being a gargantuan release of elemental energy, named for the Big Bang, the theoretical large-scale explosion of material from which the known universe and all matter within it are said to have arisen.
