The Black Core is a dangerous item in the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
Description[]
An Underworld legendary super-powerful bomb. It's made from a stone called Black Crystal. It's found deep in the Underworld and absorbs power endlessly, its size being directly correlated to their overall power. They're weaponized using Old Magic but due to their extreme destructive power, even evil creatures that casually use Forbidden Magic fear using it.
History[]
Thirteen years ago, when Hadlar rampaged the Surface World as the Dark Lord, Velzar, the King of the Abyss, used a Black Core while battling the Dragon knight Baran on a certain Underworld Continent. The entire continent was vaporized by the power of the blast.
Later on, another one was secretly implanted by Vearn into the new body of the resurrected Hadlar, in the eventuality he would ever be made into a expendable sacrifice. During his modifications of Hadlar's body, Zaboera became aware of the device's presence, but due to his traitorous nature, he preferred keeping it in its place and not tell Hadlar anything about it. The occasion for its detonation happened when Hadlar, now a Superior Being, challenged both Baran and his son Dai at the doorstep of Vearn's palace underneath the Field of Death, and once it was clear that Hadlar would not be able to win, Vearn callously distantly activated the Black Core. However, Baran, who had realized the bomb's presence, pierced Hadlar's body, removing the core while de-activating it with his Draconic Aura. Unforunately, Mystvearn appeared, directly re-activating the Black Core once again; no longer able to stop it, with no other choice left, Baran expended all of his life energy by using his Doruora to contain most the blast, saving Dai, Hadlar, as well all the people who were aboveground at the time, the other members of the Disciples of Avan and the remaining members of the Hadlar Royal Guards. This costed the Dragon Knight his life, who after a few words with his son, expired, transfering his Dragon Crest to him. Due to this betrayal, Hadlar rebelled against Vearn, and interferred in his curb-stomping fight against Dai and his friends; however, despite his valiant effort against Vearn, due to the intervention of Zaboera, Hadlar was almost defeated, if not for the sacrifice of Block. Hence, all groups ended up retrating from Vearn's palace, leving Vearn alone for the time being, who reasumed his bombing of the surface with his palace, which was now floating in the air, seemingly hitting random locations.
However, Vearn's trump card was not the devastation caused by the palace projectiles: what the palace was actually shooting were six towers, each one containing inside a Black Core ten times larger than the one that was placed inside Hadlar, and as such ten times as powerful as the one which destroyed the Field of Death; each of these bombs was placed in a strategic location at the outskirts of the world, forming a magic circle hexagon (or a six-pointed star of evil in the original release) that would amplify even more their already gigantic power. Vearn's plan was to detonate these absurdly powerful bombs, in order to annihilate the surface and expose the Underworld to the sun. Fortunately, thanks to the last power of Gomechan, Dai was able to communicate to the entire world what was going on, making it possible for the six Black Cores inside the pillars spread across the world, to all be frozen thanks to a joint effort of the people of the world, including Lon Beruk, Matoriv and the Fake Heroes, thusly avoiding the Black Core's chained activation and foiling Vearn's master plan.
One last Black Core appeared at the very end of the story: Killvearn, now revealed to having been a mechanical doll puppeteered by the actual Killvearn, the Jinkster Piropo, disclosed to the still recovering group of heroes, fresh out of their epic battle against the Dark King, the presence of a Black Core bomb, concealed inside the head of the fake body. With the death of Vearn, his mission technically fullfilled, Killvearn now planned to activate the bomb, originally meant for Vearn, to not only wipe out any future opposition for his master Velzar, should he ever be released from his stony prison but also, due to the blast of the Black Core resonating with the one frozen inside the nearby pillar, wipe out most of humanity from the surface; however, much, much quicker than he had anticipated, the heroes sprung into action, mortally wounding him, while Popp and Dai took the Black Core into the stratosphere with Levizoom, where it would safely explode. At the last second, Dai pushed Popp out of the way, leaving only him to take the full blast of the bomb, much to the shock and horror of the mage. Some weeks later, after many frenetic searches from his friends, everyone assumed that Dai had perished in the explosion; however, that is when Lon Beruk pointed out the magic crystal inside the Sword of Dai: as it contained the soul of the sword, which was intrinsically linked with Dai's life, the fact that it was still shining brightly, meant that Dai, wherever he may be, was alive and well. Overjoyed, his friends decided to move on with their lives, attending the day when Dai would come back to them.
Trivia[]
- The extreme destructive power of the Black Core is similar to the Dragon Knight's powerful destructive spell, Doruora
