Brass is a character in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and Dai's adoptive grandfather.
Profile[]
Avan the Hero and the Hellfire Dark Lord[]
Brass is a monster lump shaman that was controlled by Hadlar in the past, having a high position in his army as one of the top four generals, alongside the mutant-Treeface Kigiro, the Death Troll Gangadia, and the Hell Knight Bartos, with Brass being by far the weakest of the four.
Brass was named by Hadlar in the Underground Palce and after that he received the mission to move to enforce the Dark Army's troops by gathering and training monsters. Brass has the perfect base in Dermline Island to develop his missions, using the magic tubes received from Hadlar to transport the troops once ready. Before departing on a Chimaera, Brass talked with Bartos about his adoptive fatherhood with the boy Hyunckel, Brass wondering if he should adopt a human child as well.
Due to his faraway position, Brass did not participate much in the conflict, only seldomly receving news and orders through a communicator, and as such, not even seeing Avan nor his party, once.
Dragon Quest: the Adventure of Dai[]
After Avan supposedly defeated Hadlar for good, the dark lord's evil influence ceased, and the monsters started living peacefully on Dermline Island. One day, he finds a baby that he named Dai (due to the "D" initial found on him) and adopted him as his own grandson. Brass trains Dai to be a mage daily, but unfortunately the boy has difficulties to learn magic and wants to be a hero instead. Brass act as a mentor to Dai against both the Fake Heroes and Varon on Dermline Island.
When Avan arrives at the island, Brass loses his role as a teacher. Brass appears again during Crocodine's invasion in Romos, being used brainwashed against Dai. After being freed from the mind control, he would return to the safe Dermline Island, where he would make a quick re-appearance later on, when Dai and Popp briefly visited again in search for the Crown of Champions, as its Orichalcum was required by Lon Beruk in order for him to forge a sword for dai.
Appearance[]
Despite being a lump shaman, he is often depicted with a light blue colour rather than red (the first anime has him red coloured). In the manga and first film, he has four fingers on each hands, like lump shamans do, but in all later anime adaptations he has 5 instead. Like most lump shaman, he carries a rod with him, and different from the rest of his kin he has discernible irises, although his eyes do become stark blank when under evil influences. He also possesses a rather large tail, unlike regular Lump Shamans.
During his time as one of Hadlar's top generals, Brass wore a black tunic and a tiara-like headpiece.
Personality[]
Brass appears as a loving, yet strict guardian to his adoptive grandson Dai. Brass regularly wants to train Dai to be a mage, despite the latter's desire to be a hero, thinking Dai is better off as a mage even though Dai has problems using spells.
Brass is a wise creature who can speak human language and serves as an unofficial leader to the monsters in Dermline Island. Despite being a monster, he is a peace-loving individual and can be amicable to human visitors but will also fight back if necessary.
When under evil influences, Brass will act according to his most basic instincts and become destructive, sadistic and aggressive, although still capable of intelligence.
Abilities[]
As a Lump Shaman, Brass is adept at spellcasting, and knows a variety of spells both offensive and supportive, the extent of which from the spells he has shown are Frizz, Frizzle, Swoosh, Fuddle, Midheal, Squelch and Boom (only in the 1991 TV anime adaptation). Dai states that his Midheal spell effects is lesser than Maam's. Despite his old age, he is also shown demonstrated a competent level of physical performance.
