Burning Breath is a recurring breath skill in the Dragon Quest series.
Description[]
A breath attack of such high temperature that it causes victims to become paralysed on contact.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest III[]
Making its debut, it is used by Armfuls to paralyze enemies and potentially cripple them, since Paralysis does not heal naturally. Grievous bodily arms and Pandora's boxes can use this breath skill in the remakes, though only Game Boy Color for the latter.
Dragon Quest IV[]
Acting the same as in III onwards, it is used by Cocoon goons, Bulldozers, Incineraytors, and Hellspawns. However, paralysis heals naturally from this game onwards.
Dragon Quest V[]
Acting the same as in its last 2 appearances, Burning Breath is learned by several monster companions such as the Flamethrower and Man o' war, thus marking the first time it can be used by the player. It costs 0 MP to use, and is used by Wormbats, Lick-o'-flames, Men o' war, and Bishop Ladja from the PS2 remake onwards, with the affliction lasting for 1~3 turns. The skill uses the same element as Whack and is ineffective against monsters immune to instant death.
Dragon Quest VI[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances, though paralysis has been given an element independent to instant death beginning with VI and the skill is obtained by advancing to rank 7 of the Monster Master vocation, as well as recruited Walking corpses in the SNES version. Paralysis lasts 4~7 turns and, when used by an ally, the skill has a 50%, 20%, 10%, and 0% chance to connect depending on the enemy's resistance. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by Hell gladiators, Sinisculptures, Biguanas, and Sail serpents, as well as Men o' War once again.
Dragon Quest VII[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by reaching rank 4 of the Monster Masher vocation in the PSX and 3DS version, as well as rank 4 of the Bone Baron and rank 2 of the Gripevine monster vocations. It has the same aspects as VI's in the original release, but now lasts 6~9 turns in the remake. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by Oinkubuses, Gripevines, Sting slimes, Gourdzillas, and Wharfhorses in battle.
Dragon Quest VIII[]
An enemy only skill for the first time since IV, it is used by Dark stars and the Emerald Dragon, as well as Bulldozers, Hellspawns, and Hell Gladiators once again, along with Corpse corporals in the 3DS remake.
Dragon Quest IX[]
Once again an enemy only skill, it is used by Dread admirals, Bagmas, Freaky tikis, Rashaveraks, Scarlet fevers, Gadrongo, Orgodemir, and Corvus, as well as Sail Serpents once again.
Dragon Quest X[]
Just like its previous appearances, it is an enemy only skill once again and is used by Corpse corporals, Terrorceratopses, Hiptiles, Polka dot dragons, Desert gorbas, Gelbatrosses, Belly sticks, Harvest dragons, Prisonagles, Lumberin' Jacks, Gasmons, Magic Beast, Razukeepers, Demon Greeter, and Magic prison graduate, as well as Hell Gladiators, Dark Stars, and Corvus once again.
Dragon Quest XI[]
An enemy only skill just like previous appearances, it is used by Gnashturtiums, Crushtaceans, and the Auroral Serpent, as well as Armfuls once again in battle against their enemies.
Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Series[]
Reappearing in the Battle Road games from Battle Road II onwards, it is used by Funghouls and Dragonthorns when they are paired up with the player in the Martial Artist and/or Priest vocations.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is learned by Men o' War at level 17, Ghouls at level 23, Armfuls at level 9, Wyverns at level 27, Red dragons and Pandora's Boxes at level 8, Small fries at level 7, Revaulting horses at level 13, Diethons at level 32, Dragsters at level 18, Dark king slimes at level 6, and Karaages at level 24, costing 12 MP to use.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[]
While it doesn't appear in the anime/manga, a similar skill, Heat Breath, is one of Crocodine's abilities used in his first battle against Dai to paralyze the young hero, who only recovered thanks to Maam using her Magic Bullet Gun to shoot a Tingle Shot at Dai.
