The Children of Hargon (ハーゴン教団 Hargon Cult) are a evil religious organization in Dragon Quest II and a recurring faction in the Dragon Quest series, lead by the cruel High Priest Hargon. After their cruel destruction of the kingdom of Moonbrooke, the cult earned the emnity of the Scions of Erdrick, who swore to put an end to them and save Torland.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest II[]

While they go unnamed at the time of their debut game, the Children nonetheless played a major role in the story, starting by destroying the defenceless Kingdom of Moonbrooke, and even slaying its king in cold blood and cursing its princess, with only one mortally injuried solider barely surviving to bring news to Midenhall.

This resulted in the King of Midenhall in tasking his son, the Prince of Midenhall, to seek out his cousins, the Prince of Cannock and the surviving Princess of Moonbrooke, and journey across the world in order to stop their High Priest from summoning his god, Malroth to destroy Torland. In order to do that, the Scions of Erdrick, while exploring the seas with a ship, first journeyed to Alefgard's capital, Tantegel, then, they receiving counsel from the Dragonlord's grandson at the old tyrant's castle, who advised them to seek out consel from the Goddess Rubiss by retriving the Five Sigils scattered across Torland and also search for the key of Hargon's hidden sanctum, the Hall of Hargon, by retriving the False idol from an underwater cave.

Upon speaking with Rubiss, the Scions received the sacred Eye of Rubiss, the only object capable to dispel the powerful illusion Hargon had casted on his Hall. Then, after crossing the trecherous Rendarak and entering the Hall, the Scions laid low Hargon's top three lieutenants. Belial, Pazuzu and Atlas, before slaying Hargon and even the summoned Malroth, succeeding in their quest, despite the many challenges met.

Dragon Quest Builders 2[]

Although defeated by the Scions of Erdrick, remnants of the cult survive and begin abducting various people left and right to put on their ships, such as the Builder of this game. However, what was left of Hargon after his defeat, a being less than a ghost, sank the Children's last ship, thusly wiping out the cult with his own hands, in order to drag the Builder into the Illusory World, a world unexpectidly created by the Scions when they used the Eye of Rubiss to allegedly, dispell the illusion on the Hall of Hargon. In the Illusion, the Children were never defeated, and they now rule everyone with an iron-fist. As described in their doctrine, members are duty-bound to destroy any and all structures they come across and to prevent the creation of new things. Many of the followers are hypocritical in their actions and will request that others outside the faith repair and create things for them. But not all members of the cult are necessary evil, just misguided or ignorant, as shown by the members befriended by the Builder, like Captain Whitebones, Pastor Al, and the friends he made while in Malhalla.

The Children are given more depth than in Dragon Quest II, showing human followers, who only obey them out of fear of death, as well as the fact that lower members expect for the higher ups don't know Malroth's name, a reference to the original NES version where Malroth was barely mentioned at all, save for an item called the Eye of Malroth in the original (False Idol from the mobile remakes onwards).

It is also revealed that Hargon's original goal was to create a world for his ideal vision by having Malroth destroy Alfegard while making a new one in its place. After his death by the Scions of Erdrick, however, he wished to destroy the whole world as revenge for the Luminaries denying the Children their salvation. However, the Builder and Malroth's amnesiac human form's friendship managed to defeat Hargon and the evil half of the soul of Malroth himself and made the illusionary world a real one, no longer destined to fade away.

Dragon Quest Tact[]

Known as the Order of Hargon in this entry, they reprise their villainous roles for the Dragon Quest II event, serving as enemies while Mindini is transformed into a dog instead of Peronel. A Gremlin and a Madusa also have Battle Road side stories detailing their jobs in the Order until after facing off with two of the Trinity the High Priest summoned, resulting in their desertion.

Iconography[]

The Children's symbol is a black bat with a sinister smile, which is also present in games where the Children don't make an appearance, but their monster minions do, such as V and X.
