Chiu is a supporting character in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. A Fat Rat trained in martial arts, he joins Dai's party as the self-proclaimed Karate Rat.

Appearance[]

Chiu is like most members of his race, a blue-furred rodent with an enlargened center body and short limbs and a long tail ending in a fluffy pom. He dresses like a martial artist, equipped with a Cloth Toga he made from a traveller's bag and a Leather Protector over the chest. He has "ぶ" written on the shoulder pad.

His toga stores the following:[1]

  • Teardrop Acorn
  • Awakening Toothbrush
  • Just Cup
  • Empty alcohol bottle
  • Small bread (morsel)
  • Eternal Hourglass
  • Good Apple
  • Starry Mallet
  • Poison Herb
  • Manga
  • Washcloth
  • Soul light (candle)
  • Purse (8 Gold coins)
  • Beast King Whistle
  • Shredded Nunchaku
  • Magic Brush

Personality[]

Not much is known about Chiu's original personality before being turned feral by Hadlar's influence, although when turned to evil it is known that he had terrorized a local town.

His will was eventually fortified through training with Brookena, which gave him the mental fortitude to resist Hadlar's influence. At present Chiu is overconfident to the point of arrogance and a show-off, often boasting and making grandoise claims which regularly fall short. Chiu has a crush on Maam and respects her both as a person and as a fellow disciple, acknowledging her combat prowess despite being her junior, and often conflicts with Popp as he is a love rival.

Despite Chiu's tendency to overstate his strength, he has proven himself a loyal friend, despite being instinctually terrified of Zamza, he was able to hold his ground and face him off in combat, despite the latter's evident superiority, persisting through sheer force of will. It is his internal strength that pushes him to fight in battles way outside his league, which is acknowledged by many.

Chiu has deceptively strong leadership abilities, being able to lead his own pack of monsters all of whom he had to defeat to earn their help. He has proven to greatly care for his men by putting his own neck for them, almost risking being slaughtered by Fenbren who had no qualms in trying to kill him for his own sadism. Said displays of loyalty and camadrerie have proven instrumental in many fights where he has inadvertently raised morale through the autenticity of his character.

Profile[]

3 years beofre Dai departed Dermline Island, Chiu was recruited by Brokeena, the so-called "God of Martial Arts" and former ally of Avan. Eventually, thanks to Brookena's training, Chiu managed to overcome the Dark Lord's influence.

Abilities[]

Chiu has been trained in Martial Arts by Brokeena, which fortified his will to the point he can resist Hadlar's influence. However, he has very little to show in terms of actual martial arts prowess for he has a rather crippling weakness; his biology fixates him with both a short stature and naturally short limbs, which greatly limitates his ability to fight like a martial artist.

Despite having many shortcomings as a fighter, including his tendency to show off, Chiu is objectively a powerful combatant, possessing literally monstrous endurance far beyond the norm for his species. He was capable of taking a severe one-sided beating against Zamza on his Superior Being form for an extended amount of time, and still be able to stand up to fight, whereas Zamza was left exhausted. A sword blow to his head by a Restless Armour, ended up with a broken blade while he himself took no damage whatsoever.

He also packs some surprising offensive power, but is often used through irregular means; He is capable of curling into a ball and rolling at great speed, slamming his foes with great force, to the point even Zamza was damaged by one such attack. He is also capable of destroying Restless Armours by headbutting them.

As a monster, he has natural instincts much more honed than most of the party. Chiu has been shown to have a comically large inventory space inside his clothes, being able to store dozens of items without seemingly taking any visible space. This ability could largely be attributed to his clothing being made from an traveller's bag.

Eventually, Chiu obtains the Beast King Whistle from Crocodine a tool that allows him to control beast monsters so long as he can beat them in battle, thus officially becoming the Beast King after Crocodine. By using this item, Chiu has been able to form his own squad of monsters dubbed the Beast King Commandos, with ground, marine and even aerial characteristics.

Not all of the members are adept fighters and some are more capable at reconnaissance and scouting. Nonetheless even the smaller and weaker combatants have combat value, by being able to use their speed and flight to confuse and disorient aggressors leaving them vulnerable to attack. This makes Chiu an effective leader with great tactical intelligence and capable of coordinating attacks to victorious results.

Later on, Chiu obtains a Spiked Nunchaku from Baduck, a comically impractical weapon with so many blades that it risks injuring the user upon use. Nonetheless Chiu has been able to wield it with surprising success as a result of both his tenacity in combat and his naturally high endurance mitigating the blowback.

The members of his team are as follow, although some joined by their own volition rather than taming:

  1. Terro, a Terrordactyl
  2. Gomechan, a Golden Metal Slime
  3. Seabei, a seaslime
  4. Alibaba, an antnibbler
  5. Dryasu, a Drohl drone
  6. Ramita, a Spiked hare
  7. Dona Dona, a Dracky
  8. Kumacha, an Ursa major
  9. Batako, a Rumble bee
  10. Daigo, an Overtoad
  11. Mr. Beast, a legendary martial artist
  12. Hymchan, former pawn chess piece Orichalcum Guard
