The Choker is a cursed accessory item in Dragon Quest.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest[]
Called "Cursed Necklace" at the time, it can only be obtained rarely from the respawning treasure chests (only one chest is respawnable in the successive re-releases) inside the Craggy Cave. While most of the time the chest will contain a Torch, in a 1/16 chances, a Choker will instead appear inside. Since its cursed, it is detrimental to equip it, as the entrace of Tantegel Castle will therefore be barred by the guards and king while under such a status, in fear of the curse spreading, The only way to remove the curse is to speak to the elderly magician in Tantegel town. The Choker is however worth 1200 gold, making it a valuable item for selling.
Dragon Quest XI[]
The Choker reappears as a Key Item, as a cameo of the original Dragon Quest. Found on the ground as a yellow sparkly spot inside the Zwaardsrust vault containing the Purple Orb, which can only be opened thanks to the Magic key, the Choker is completely passive, only giving a warning if examined to not wear it due to its ominous aura.

Trivia[]
- A popular way to obtain the Choker is to inspect the respawning chest while the Hero's inventory is full, preferably of useless items. That way the contents of the chest can be repeatedly checked without emptying it. Once the Choker appears inside, all that is left is to discard an unwanted item.
