Damdara (previously known as Domdora and Hauksness) is a town in the desert in southwestern Alefgard. It exists in Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest III.

Appearances

Dragon Quest

Damdara was destroyed by the Dragonlord's minions and has since become infested with their kind. At the cost of his life, the strongest armor, Erdrick's armour, was hidden by his guardian, the blacksmith Magog, during the sack of the city, burying it near a tree behind his shop. Unfortunatly that exact same spot is now protected by a Knight aberrant. The destruction of the city claimed various people including the renown bard Galen, founder of Galenholm and guardian of the Lyre of Ire. Luckily, Magog's own family was able to safely evacuate to the nearby fortress city of Cantlin, where his grandson would later provide Erdrick's descendant with vital clues in retriving the legendary armour.

In the remakes for the Gameboy Color and the IOS version, returning here after the defeat of the Dragonlord, the hero can meet Galen's spirit and he will comment on how lively the town used to be and how when he closes his eyes he can see the town of yesteryear. He will then fade away and the music of the town will change to the standard town music.

Monsters

Dragon Quest II

With little to no survivors of the destruction of the town, nothing is ever done to Damdara to restore it. The ruined settlement is consumed by the surrounding desert.

Dragon Quest III

Damdara is a large, stable town in the distant past. Though it endures the fury of Zoma's wrath as all of Alefgard does, its people have not yet given in to despair. Though still a desert locale, greenery persists in the town and a large pond surrounded by flowers sits at the northeastern section. However, a thug in the well notes that the water level is receding and that the town may not be long for the world even if monsters are repelled.

A bard and a Faerie sit together at pond, with the former regaling the player of the family strife of his idol, Galen, and the latter stating that an important instrument is near the baths in Kol. Lena, a dancing girl from Asham in the upper world, rests at the town's inn. She explains that she fled an audience member who was getting too close for comfort and wonders if her former employer is doing well. Lena will also ask the player to tell the manager that she is safe and, when speaking to the man in the back room of the dancing hall at night, he will be besides himself with joy at hearing that his former star is well and give the party a Magic bikini for their trouble.

The owner of the second weapon shop frets over naming his unborn child and his business is closed, with the family settling on Magog after Zoma's death, much to the wife's consternation. The swordsman standing in the primary weapon shop mentions hearing that the town is the location of an Orichalcum ingot, though he can't find it himself. A woman near the horse stables on the east side of the town mentions that she occasionally sees a glimmer of light in the perpetual purple twilight at the far left side of the pasture. When the player searches the ground there, they will find the orichalcum.

Dragon Quest XI 3DS and Switch

The Luminary ventures to Damdara through the Echo Chamber. The town is full of the ghosts of the citizens killed by the Knight Aberrant, who rules over the ruins with an iron fist. Tasked by the ghost of Galen to put the spirits to rest, the tin tyrant must be slain. Though only indirectly named, even the spirit of the elderly Magog makes an appearance, forced to uselessly attend to the ruins of his late shop. After the fiend is slain the spirits peacefully return into the afterlife. The exact time of the Luminary's visit is not made clear, as the knight would either have to be replaced or revived once killed if the time is before the original events, and no monsters remain in Alefgard once the Dragonlord is defeated if it takes place after, but since the knight first makes himself known as a disembodied voice, one can infer that he himself is a ghost.

Dragon Quest Builders

In this alternate reality where history took a different turn, the city of Damdara makes a small but significant appearance. Resting in an arid region named after it, the city itself is now nothing more that a small, mostly faded ruin. Here, Magnus, the heir of Magog, was imprisoned by the Dragonlord's minions for his crime in pusuing his family blacksmithing tradition. When the Builder of legend came in search of him under Rollo's request, he came across the ruins of Damdara, where he found to his surprise his friend Pippa waiting for him. This was however a disguise, a cruel trick of a Knight aberrant, who wanted to torture and confuse him. Luckily, the surrounding ruins proven to be too sturdy for the monster to break, resulting in him accidentaly knocking himself out multiple times until his defeat. Retrieving a key from his remains, the Builder would then free Magnus from his prison with said key, after his pleads for help clued the boy of his location, and lead the blacksmith back to the new Cantlin the young hero was rebuilding. Rollo would later speculate that Magnus imprisonment was meant to be a trap for the Builder from the very start, otherwise Magnus's jailer whould have not disguised himself as a close friend of the boy.

In the region of Damdara, the monster armies had also erected a massive pyramid, inside which they offered their black prayers to a pair of Evil idols. Sent here by Rollo to retrive said idols, which fire-breathing capabilities would prove useful in the defense of the new Cantlin, the Builder infiltrated the pyramid during one of its religious services. While initially appearing human, once the Builder pilfered for himself the idols, the partakers revealed their true, monstruos form and began attacking him for his interruption but luckily they didn't pursue him outside of the pyramid. Inside the pyramid, by taking a side path initially blocked by some dirt blocks, two additional treasure chests can be found, one containing a Fireplace, the other a pair of Featherfall footwear, which negate fall damage once equiped.
