The Darktree leaf is a key item in Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Quest X.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest VIII[]

It is a leaf taken from a great tree growing in the World of Darkness and is used by the party in their quest to prevent Rhapthorne, the Lord of Darkness, from returning to power once again.

History[]

In the distant past, the Darktree leaf was one of the possessions of Kupas, one of the Seven Sages who helped seal away Rhapthorne long ago. Kupas kept the leaf hidden away in case it was ever needed again in the future. According to the elven maiden Raya, the leaf was taken from a giant tree that exists in the World of Darkness, probably a dark counterpart of Yggdrasil. It has the ability to reveal the location of great evil when it is placed on a map.

After the events in the World of Darkness, the party had lost track of the evil Sir Leopold and Rhapthorne's sceptre and they eventually made their way to the hidden village of Tryan Gully with the help of the Godbird's soulstone. There, they found a society where Humans, Elves, and monsters coexist peacefully together and met the elf Raya. She believed that it was the guidance of Kupas that had led the party to the village and she offered them the gully's treasure in their quest to stopping the revival of Rhapthorne. When the darktree leaf was used in conjunction with the world map, it lead them to the Lord High Priest's residence at Savella Cathedral, where they encounted Sir Leopold once again.

Dragon Quest X[]

The Darktree leaf, one of the few leaves left on the Dark Tree, a giant half-rotted tree found in the region of Eltona that was corrupted by demonic miasma, as a sort of dark counterpart of Yggdrasil, is involved in part of the main quest: fifty years prior, it seemed that the Elf princess, Rita, a child with the power to communicate with the Holy Land, the source of power of Eltona, had lost her mind and murdered both her father and her mother, Queen Agushuna, leaving only her younger brother alive. Now an adult, King Nikoroi, having been left in dark all his life by his elders about those tragic events, sought to undestand what had actually happened, and after seeing a some spectral memories of that day at the old abbandoned palace, he asked Kyuusuke and the Hero, to retrive the Darktree leaf for him, as that was the last request of his mother. The Darktree leaf, alongside the Dark Tree itself, were protected by the Guardians of the Dark Tree

When he used the Darktree leaf in the old throne room, Queen Agushuna reappeared before him, having only been sealed away and not killed by Rita. She asked the group to accompany her to check on the Holy Land, to check on its status after Rita had supposedly drained its powers. Once there however, the queen revealed her true identity as Aragune: the truth was that, fifty years before, the sickly queen had been steadily weakned and then finally killed and substituted by the evil spider. Being the sensitive child that she was, Rita had sensed that something was up, and when Aragune killed the king, in order to steal the ring necessary to enter the Holy Land, Rita used all of her power to seal away her, losing her life in the process.

Now freed, Aragune revealed her true intentions, and tried to kill Nikoroi, Kyuusuke and the Hero, before completely drain the power of the Holy Land for herself and plunge Eltona into despair. However, the Hero was able to defeat her in a long, arduous battle. With the death of Aragune, Rita's soul, who had taken the form of a big white tree in order to block the powers of the Holy Land from Aragune's reach, was now free to drop her defences, and let once again the powers of the Holy Land reach throughtout the continent of Eltona, passing away in the afterlife in peace, after having asked to pass a message to her brother, unaware of the identity of the old man before her.

For their valiant efforts, King Nikoroi, heartbroken but filled with resolve, rewarded the Hero with a golden Key Emblem, simbol of the great service they had done for Eltona.
