Defending Champion (Parry and Block in Super Light) is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series.
Description[]
Reduces damage done to the user by 90%, unlike the standard Defend.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest III 2D-HD[]
Only appearing in the game's 2D-HD Remake, it is learned by Erdrick at level 22. It costs 2 MP to use for the first time since Rivals, and is used by Wyrtles, Squidzillas, Ursa minors, and Gold Golems in battle.
Dragon Quest IV Remakes[]
Only appearing in the remakes, it is used by Chow Mein and Testudogres.
Dragon Quest VI[]
Making its debut, it is learned by advancing to rank 6 of the Ranger vocation, and will always reduce physical strikes and magical damage, though the skill has no effect on breath attacks, Body Slam, Puff-Puff (male version), Pearly Gates, Tidal Wave, Lightning, Gigaslash, Lightning Storm, Magic Burst, and Ferocious Roar, so caution must be used depending on the monsters encountered. It costs 0 MP to use, and is also used by Grim grinners, Iron tortoises, and Mortamor in his second forme in battle.
Dragon Quest VII[]
Acting the same as in VI, it is learned by reaching rank 6 of the Pirate vocation in the PSX version and rank 4 of the same vocation in the 3DS remake. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by Armoured wartoises, Escudogres, Testudogres, the Crabble-rouser boss, and Maeve in battle.
Dragon Quest VIII[]
Acting the same as in its last two appearances, it is learned by investing 11 skill points into the Hero's Fisticuffs skill tree and 68 into Angelo's, though they must be unarmed to use the technique, but the skill is affected by tension; at peak anger a character can reduce damage to 1.3% (1⁄75). It costs 0 MP to use once again.
Dragon Quest IX[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances, it is learned with 18 skill points invested into the Shield skill tree. So long as a shield is held, a character can use the skill regardless of what weapon they wield. The Coup de Grâce Knight Watch can be seen as an advanced version of this skill, as it prevents everything from touching a character, even Disruptive Wave. It costs 3 MP to use, and is also used by Grim Grinners in battle once again.
Dragon Quest X[]
Learned when 100 skill points are invested into the Paladin's Virtue skill tree, players will take a defensive position for about 15 seconds, greatly reducing the damage they take. However, they cannot do anything in the defensive position until they press the cancel button. It costs 8 MP to use, and is also used by Crabber dabber doos, Handsome crabs, Gum shields, Peekabogres, Hell's bellboys, Lingering ogres, and Mysterious Armed Soldiers. In the Offline version of the game, it is learned by the Hero in the Paladin vocation at level 50 and costs 4 MP to use.
Dragon Quest XI[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances, it is learned by Hendrik after investing 16 skill points in his Fraternity Character Builder and costs 2 MP to use, lasting for one turn.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light[]
Acting the same as in previous appearances once again, it is already learned by the Hexagoon, Crowgre, and newly reincarnated Mechan-o'-wyrms and Pale whales when they are recruited, Wyrtles at level 26, Living statues at level 12, King crabs at level 25, Hex hellmets at level 32, Belleau and Cabot at level 34, Grinades and Cavorting columns at level 28, Glacial golems at level 14, Golden boxes at level 19, Stalagosaur at level 18, Beetlebully at level 26, and Demon of judgment at level 17, costing 40 MP to use.
Dragon Quest Tact[]
Known as Big Defence in this spinoff entry, it is already learned by Cluboon ace when it is recruited, and acts the same as in previous appearances once again, costing 32 MP to use, though it can only be used 3 times per battle.
