Double Up is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series. It has changed significantly throughout its appearances, but it always affects the potency of the user's attack.

Dragon Quest VI

Double Up strikes first at 200% power, but the user suffers increased damage during the round. It is learned by Carver at level 14 and by Spot at level 16. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 3 of the Paladin vocation. It is also used by Berzorkers, Brick, and Averill in battle

Dragon Quest VII

Learned the same way as in VI, but can also be learned by advancing to Rank 1 of the Champion vocation in the 3DS remake. It is also used by Fandangows,

Dragon Quest IX

This ability is learned with 22 skill points allocated into the Guts skill tree. It increases attack by two stages, while lowering defence by one stage. The bolstered attack state lasts 6~9 turns, and the crippled defence lasts for 7~10 turns. It is also used by Harmours and Dreadful drackals in battle against their enemies.

Dragon Quest X

Learned and used the same way as in IX, but now costs 4 MP to use. It is also used by Rottontails, Wild chappies, Bad hares, Killer fangs, and Blondies in battle against their enemies.

Dragon Quest XI

Hendrik will learn this through his Heroism skill tree for 16 points. It costs 4 MP to use, and operates as it did in its last two appearances. It is also used by Rottontails and Bad hares once again.
