Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai - The Hero Avan and The Hellfire Dark Lord (ドラゴンクエスト ダイの大冒険 勇者アバンと獄炎の魔王, Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken Yuusha Avan to Gokuen no Maou) is a manga series written by Riku Sanjo, illustrated by Zipman!!'s author Shibata Yuusaku.
The plot centres around the events that happened 15 years before the original series, readapting and then expending upon the Avan backstory that was present in volume 13.

Overall the design of many characters remain the same, only with the difference in art style. However Bartos has a great change in his design.
The blood, sexual jokes and filler pages that were the trademark of the original manga return in this version, alongside already showcased characters as well as brand new ones.
Avan de Zinuar III, the future hero tutor that 15 years ago was a knight from Carl and went on a journey alongside his colleague knight Roka to defeat Hadlar. Avan is very proficient with magic and is the founder of his own sword-art style.
