Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate (ドラゴンクエストXII 選ばれし運命の炎 lit. "Dragon Quest XII The Chosen Flame of Destiny"), is the twelfth instalment of the main Dragon Quest series. It is currently in development.

While not much is known about the game, Yuji Horii stated during the 35th anniversary live stream that the turn-based battle system will be changed, but assures that it won't completely disappear. He also stated that the game will be darker than past games, saying it will be mostly aimed for adults. The game will also focus on life choices, with characters making tough decisions that will change their fates.

Development History

• In April 2023, the image for the game has been changed. According to a Japanese blog, the Dragon Quest series are their main focus for now.
• In June 2023, Yuji Horii had a Zoom meeting with fellow workers about the game's development difficulties, such as targeting adult audiences and working remotely thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game is currently available for preorder on Playasia.
• In April 2024, the Dragon Quest producer has stepped down from his role because of the constant delays of the upcoming Dragon Quest game, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
• On May 27th 2024, Yuji Horii announced on Twitter/X that he is worried about the next mainline Dragon Quest game's development because of the recent death of Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama a while back, stating that Yuji will do his best without them both.
• On February 10th 2025, Yuji Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest XII is still actively in development, with new information to be revealed gradually.
• On May 13th 2025, Yuji Horii has re-confirmed that Dragon Quest XII is still in development, telling fans to be excited for the future of the Dragon Quest series.
• On May 14th, 2025, Yuji Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest XII may be compatible with the Switch 2, Nintendo's successor to the Original Switch, with Horii saying, 'Yes, I believe it could be compatible with Switch 2 as well'.
