Erdwin's Lantern is an important plot point in Dragon Quest XI.
Story[]
A star that Erdwin turned into after the defeat of the Dark One, the Lantern is first thought to be Erdwin watching over the citizens of Erdrea, though as the game progresses, it gets bigger and bigger, that by the point of Act 2, it can be seen while in Gallopolis. When the Luminary, Rab, Hendrik, and Sylvando investigate the Celestial Sands with Prince Faris at behest of the Sultan, Rab tries to make out what the ancient letters on the lantern say while a mysterious black Tockle yearns to reunited with the Lantern, though Mordegon destroys it saying Erdrea is his and his alone, with no other villain contesting him for the claim. Later, after the Luminary travels back in time to stop Veronica's sacrifice and stops Mordegon before he can get his hands on the Sword of Light, the Lantern descends in Gallopolis again and the black Tockle is revealed to be Calasmos' soul trying to reunite with his body. Flashbacks into Erdwin's life reveal further that Erdwin's Lantern is actually a prison for Calasmos' body, since the Dark One's final death was delayed due to Erdwin being betrayed by Morcant, who was tempted by Calasmos for more power. Since the blow could not be completed, Elder Eegoltap, the rest of the Watchers, Drustan, and Serenica could only seal his body inside the Lantern and hope that someone of Erdwin's bloodline can finish what he started with no betrayals. A fragment of the Lantern is also the focus of the Act 2 sidequest A Little Bit of Lantern.
