Femiscyra (formerly known as Gardenburgh) is a location in Dragon Quest IV. A remote, matriarchal kingdom east of Burland, it is secluded within an impassable mountain range.

Synopsis[]

A recent volcanic eruption has blocked off the narrow mountain pass leading to the kingdom, sealing it off from the outside world; the barrier can only be penetrated with the Magma staff found in the Zamoksva treasury. Femiscyra is inhabited almost exclusively by militant women, with only a few male residents (such as the priest). As such, the local armour shop only caters for the female party members.

Story[]

Upon arrival, the Hero and their party are framed for the theft of a bronze rosary. Though not trusting them entirely, the Queen does allow them to prove their innocence, but with one member of the party remaining imprisoned for insurance.

The party track the true thief, Kirk Buzzer, to his hideout in Cove's Cove, and retrieve the stolen rosary. In return, the queen releases the captive party member, and rewards the Hero with both the ultimate key and the Zenithian shield.

Etymology[]

Owing to that it is a nation of women, Femiscyra is most likely a play on "Themiscyra", a fictional island in the DC Comics universe steeped in Greek mythology. The island is said to be the birthplace of Princess Diana, otherwise known as Wonder Woman. The authors of Wonder Woman likely drew inspiration from the Ancient Greek city of the same name, which was supposedly the capital city of the Amazon tribes of legend.
