Nelgel the Netherlord (The Netherfiend in his second form) is the primary antagonist and final boss in the first version of Dragon Quest X. A demon born from the evil ritual performed by the follower of Nerodus, Razerburn, 500 years prior, Nelgel, styling himself as a supreme god of death, assisted his ally, Maldragora the Worldbreaker, in his demonic invasion of Astoltia by sealing Rendacia behind a veil of darkness, and destroying the village of Tenton.

Once bested, he prayed to the supreme source of all darkness for power, but even when transformed into the Netherfiend, he was still defeated and destroyed for good.

During the 10th anniversary celebration, Nelgel is revived, stonger than ever, but he is once again defeated. However, as he has dominion over death, Nelgel promises that, as long as the Hero would continue to slay enemies, he will rise again in the future, leaving a menacing warning that they will meet again someday.

Appearance[]

Nelgel has a rather dandified appearance, with purple skin and a young man's visage, white long hair and goat-like horns. He wears a green striped suit with a cape and an animal skull ornament at the chest. He bears the Netherscythe, a weapon that can cut through dimensions.

Etymology[]

The name "Nelgel" is a possible corruption of Nergal, the name of a deity often portrayed as demon working closely with Satan. This is rather fitting, given how Nelgel's actions were completely by order of his ally, Maldragora. The name "Meiou" comes from the old Habsburg motto, meaning destiny to rule the world. This is also fitting, given how Nelgel is ruling Astoltia on Maldragora's behalf.

Trivia[]

  • Although numerous romanizations of ネルゲル can be found across the Internet, the romanization "Nelgel" appears to be the most agreed upon among fans. It was confirmed as the official name in Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition and his reappearance in Dragon Quest Tact, years later.
    • Dragon Quest Illustrations: 30th Anniversary Edition instead uses "Meiou Nerugeru" and "Meijuuou Nerugeru".
  • Nelgel is the only Dragon Quest villain to succeed in killing the Hero. The only other to succeed in this endeavor is Patriarch Orstov.
    • In addition, he is the first Dragon Quest villain since Mortamor to appear on the box art for his respective game.
  • Nelgel's appearance and overall demeanor is reminiscent to that of Orgodemir, and bears a strong resemblance to Whis from Dragon Ball Z.
    • His antagonistic nature and the fact that he has a scythe also means he that bears a strong resemblance to Magus from Chrono Trigger.
