Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (ドラゴンクエスト ダイの大冒険, Dragon Quest: Dai no Daiboken) is a 1991 TV series that adapts the first 87 chapters of the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga. The animated adaptation was first teased with a pseudo-pilot short film with the same name released a few months earlier as part of the Toei Anime Fair Summer '91.

Like the comic on which it's based, the series takes multiple elements from the Erdrick trilogy, in particular from Dragon Quest III. The focus of the series is the adventures of Dai as he meets several characters in the course of the story, from training to become a hero to genuinely trying to save the world.

Setting[]

The story begins in the island called Dermline where the boy named Dai lives with monsters. He is the only human being in this island and he was brought up by monsters. When he becomes a young boy, monsters suddenly get insane and threaten Dai. Hadlar revives again in this world and his evil will makes monsters mad. And there, the hero Avan and his mage apprentice Popp came to the island. Their magic prevents the evil will from spreading in the island. Dai begins to study magic from them to become a hero. Then they begin their adventure out of the island. He learns magic, finds armours and meets friends through the journey, and he will finally become the legendary hero to destroy Hadlar. However, there waits a lot of evils and monsters on the way of their great adventures![1]

Characters[]

Main characters[]

  • Dai: The main hero. He has grown up on an island full of friendly monsters. For a short time, he was trained by Avan, but he always has difficulty casting spells, usually working only when he is very angry. His real name, given by Baran is Dino.
  • Popp: Another disciple of Avan who came to Dai's island with him. He is the first party member to join, so to say. A magic user with a lazy and cowardly streak who often has to be shamed into doing the right (heroic) thing.
  • Maam: Daughter of the warrior and the priest who fought with Avan in the previous war, and a former disciple of his. She is described as a Warrior Priest. She has no offensive spells, but a gun Avan gave her that can fire spells in bullets. Popp, who initially detests her, later develops a crush on Maam.
  • Leona: The young princess of Papnica, a land of sages. Dai saves her from a conspiracy that tries to use a ritual on Dermline island to kill her. Dai is very fond of Leona and she truly believes in him as her savior and guardian.
  • Gomechan: A gold metal slime with wings. He rarely takes an active part in battle, but he resembles the series' mascot.

Dark Army[]

  • Hadlar: He's one of the main antagonists and the previous Dark Lord who was defeated by Avan. Thanks to the Dark King Vearn, Hadlar returns as the supreme commander of his Dark Army.
  • Mystvearn: He's one of the main antagonists. He is the commander of the Shadow Legion in Vearn's army.
  • Zaboera: He is a Darkling who serves as the commander of the Mystic Legion in Vearn's army. He holds the title of Mystic Bishop.
  • Flazzard: Created by Hadlar using forbidden magic. His body is a combination of fire and ice and he can uses both elements to attack.
  • Baran: Dai's biological father. He is the commander of the Dragon Legion until he learns that Dai is his son and also a Dragon Knight.
  • Killvearn: An antagonist who is recurring monster and also the personal assassin of Dark King Vearn. Both him and Mystvearn hold a strange friendship do to their mysterious nature.
  • Vearn: He is the Dark King, and one of the main antagonists who seeks to rule the Human World. He picked Hadlar to lead his Dark Army as its supreme commander, and he also picked a few of the six generals.

Supporting characters[]

  • Crocodine: Beast King of the Furfang Legion. He then joins the heroes and becomes a very trusting ally.
  • Hyunckel: He initially serves as the leader of the Dark Army's Undead Legion until leaving his position to join the heroes.
  • Avan: He trains the hero for a short time, but then sacrifices himself fighting Hadlar. He remains ever-present as a role model, and many of the characters are former disciples or comrades of Avan.
  • Brass: Dai's adoptive grand father.
  • Baduck: Baduck is an old man and a veteran soldier that wears a red pink armour.
  • Matoriv: A sadistic and lecherous old mage who fought alongside Avan in the previous war. Reluctantly, he agrees to help the heroes again and trains Pop for a while.

Fake Heroes[]

A group who act as heroes, but are really just after money. They are:

Papnica Troika[]

  • Apollo: Apollo is the leader of Papnica's three sages.
  • Marin: She is one of the three sages.
  • Aimi: She is younger sister of Marin and one the three sages.

Influence on source manga[]

Due to the anime release, the manga changed its logo by putting the focus on "The Adventure of Dai" rather than "Dragon Quest".

The anime revealed the name of Masopho and Herohero years before the manga.

The manga team was involved with the original ending of the manga,[2] Brass' scenes from episodes 45 and 46 seemingly were adapted back in chapter 196 of the manga.

The three films also have influence of the manga: the first showed Hadlar riding a dragon, similar to what he did in Avan's bonus chapter; the second revealed Captain Nelson's name and the third showed Welner forest later appearing in chapter 339.
