Flazzard is an antagonist in the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga and its anime adaptations. He is the commander of the Blizzblaze Legion of the Vearn's Dark Army, a division made of vicious elemental monsters.

Personality[]

Flazzard is vile, cruel and cowardly, completely starved for victory and glory, he will do absolutely everything to attain both for no dishonor is too low for him. Incredibly sadistic, he burned Marin's face for no real reason and even scoffed at the idea of fair treatment to women, because for him there are only the strong and the weak and even went as far as ordering his subordinates to completely genocide every human they met, no matter whether it was women or children. He has a particular dislike for Hyunckel due to being human, and even tried to kill him via an "accident" by activating the dormant volcano where his base was.

Like the two halves that compose him, Flazzard has shown rather bipolar tendencies, being cunning, scheming and coldly rational, but also passionate, rash and burningly aggressive. He can be shown to be rather unrestrained, in particular in the manga where he is seen showing the middle finger.

It was revealed that the reason why Flazzard is so obsessed with victory and glory is because of him being created for just a year, therefore, Flazzard desired to leave marks behind in the demon army so that he would be remembered.

After he is put into the Ultimate Armor of the Shadow Legion, as he no longer use any tactics, instead relaying purely on brute force, and is noticeably losing his sanity.

Appearance[]

Flazzard is a monster composed of two elemental halves a right icy half, and a left fiery half, very similar to that of Dancing flames and Frostburns, but combined. He is a tall, humanoid monstrosity with a rocky musculature and an iconic grin with an all black open mouth. His most prized possession is the Infernal Emblem around his chest with chains which he obtained as a test of loyalty by Vearn.

Plot[]

Background[]

He was created by Hadlar after his resurrection through an forbidden spell. He was then chosen to be the Blizzblaze Legion Commander of the Dark Army. One time Vearn tested the six commanders by challenging one of them to take his badge from a flame. Flazzard's desire for greatness made him to be the one to take it.

Gathering Arc[]

Flazzard destroys and conquest Ohzame, and then goes to the Sovereign Rock Castle as he was summoned by Hadlar along the rest of the legion commanders, he instructs his men to kill every human they meet, no matter if women or children. When he arrives at the base he meets Zaboera and is surprised to learn of Crocodine's defeat. He meets Baran and expresses sympathy at being summoned despite being sent to conquer the Kingdom of Ringaia. Baran cuts his sympathy short revealing that it was already conquered which leaves Flazzard and Zaboera flabbergasted at such a feat.

Hadlar gathers the commanders and apologizes for summoning them in vain as he had planned to have them kill Dai but Vearn gave the order to Hyunckel instead. Flazzard is furious at this, but Hadlar assures Flazzard that Hyunckel is indeed the perfect man for the job due to being a disciple of Avan and much stronger than Dai. Flazzard, however didn't sit idle and decided to go there intending to kill them, seeing Hyunckel defeated he took it as an opportunity to get rid of everyone and claim all the glory for himself, so he cast a fire spell that activated the dormant volcano intending for everyone to be boiled alive.

He soon returns to the Underground Palace along the commanders, being "notified" of the erupting volcano while expressing his "sympathies" although everyone around him realizes he was both the responsible and is feigning it. Flazzard announces that it is his turn next and sets his sight on Princess Leona.

Clash Arc[]

Making his way to attack Leona, Flazzard arrives at her hideout in Valge Island Tower. He soon demonstrates his ability to manipulate fire and ice by easily defeating some guards, and is subsequently confronted by the Sages Apollo and Aimi who try to exploit his elemental weaknesses by attacking fire with ice and vice-versa to no avail as he uses to corresponding halves to absorb their magic before attempting to blast them with their own magic which is blocked by Apollo's Insulatle which impresses Flazzard. Apollo provokes Flazzard that he cannot break the protective barrier, to which Flazzard decides to show his own power move in response, utilizing Finger Flare Bombs to cast five Kafrizz spells instantly he devastates the barrier and leaves everyone with serious injuries, he proceeds to burn Aimi's face before tossing her away (edited in the 2020 anime merely as throwing her) to which he is berated by Apollo for his cowardice towards a woman, to which Flazzard responds that in a battlefield there exist only the strong and the weak and there is no room for chivalry.

He approaches Leona who bravely claims that even she were to fall, so long as humans have their pride they'll always fight back against the Dark Army. Flazzard attempts to kill her with a spear made of ice but is stopped by Dai who fights the legion commander to save Leona, impressing the latter seeing how much Dai has grown as he is able to utilize spells. Dai proves formidable for even Flazzard who is cornered as Dai's party arrive to help him. Intending to win at any cost, Flazzard summons the ultimate technique of the Blizzblaze Legion, erecting the Dark Fire Spire and Dark Ice Spire which together create a force field over the tower that weakens humans to a mere 20% of their power and nullifies all spells except Flazzard's giving him a significant upper hand.

Dai chastises him for his cowardice, but Flazzard doesn't care as all he wants is to win.. Maam suggests retreating as the battle is not in their favour, but Flazzard freezes Leona using a forbidden ice spell that drains her of her life, provoking Dai onto fighting. Although Dai fights bravely he is still unable to fully match Flazzard forcing Maam to knock him out in order to escape using the balloon, Flazzard tries to impede it but Maam uses one of her magic bullets as a bomb to escape. As they fly, Flazzard sends his Dancing Flames after them which begin burning the balloon despite the heroes' opposition. As they are about to sink into the whirlpool, Matoriv saves them by extinguishing the monsters allowing the balloon to stabilize to safety, allowing the heroes to retreat to plan their counterattack.

While Dai's party trains under Matoriv while preparing a plan, Flazzard issues a warning through the Heyedras that Leona's life will end on the next sunset, giving the heroes an ultimatum. Intending to fully exterminate Dai's party, Hadlar along with Myst-Vearn and Zaboera's armies personally go to defend the Dark Spires while Flazzard watches over the tower. Although Hadlar's plan nearly succeeded it was ultimately thwarted by the aid of the defected Crocodine and Hyunckel forcing Flazzard to prepare for Dai's arrival in Valge Tower as the force field was destroyed. When Dai's party arrives, he rounds them up with Rockbombs. Seeing that he has no escape, he deploys his bombs and attacks the party but is cornered as Crocodine and Hyunckel arrive to help.

Flazzard admits that the odds are against him thus removes his prideful badge that he had received from Vearn with the two former Legion Commanders narrating the importance of the badge to Flazzard, who in turn says he doesn't need it if he can acquire the glory of destroying the Dark Army's strongest foes and uses his most powerful technique, exploding and turning his body in small rocks and attacking the party by manipulating then. The attack proves formidable as no matter how much they attack the debris they only make more of it instead of inflicting real damage to Flazzard who has hidden his core within the fragments. However as Flazzard reforms, it is clear the technique has a tremendous toll even on himself with Maam questioning why he would go so far just to win. Flazzard explains that he has been alive for only one year so far as a creation of Hadlar made through forbidden spells, as a result he yearns for leaving marks behind and attain glory that cannot ever be overcome no matter how many years pass.

When everyone is almost defeated, Dai remembers his lessons with Avan and realizes the key to defeating Flazzard is on the Air Slash that he never learned properly. Dai challenges Flazzard that if his technique is successful Dai will win, but otherwise Flazzard will win. Flazzard is amused until Dai performs an Air Slash that surprises Flazzard but is not able to fully defeat him. Flazzard tries to attack but his body takes damage, realizing Dai's technique did manage to scratch his core. Flazzard breaks apart again as Dai tries to attack the core in futility. Hyunckel has Dai turn in order to splash blood on his eyes to make him remember he must not see with his eyes to perform the Air Slash. Dai soon begins sensing the presences of everyone before spotting an accumulation of malice which represents Flazzard, striking at that point and successfully destroying Flazzard's core much to the latter's horror splitting Flazzard in two halves as they cannot remain conjoined with the ice half burned by Popp.

Myst-Vearn then appears seemingly defending Flazzard and summons the Shadow Legion's Ultimate Armour which Flazzard can use by turning into burning Dark Aura. Flazzard reluctantly agrees to become a servant of Myst-Vearn for the sake of victory and the vizier turns him into Dark Fire Energy and puts him on the armour. Flazzard overpowers Dai's allies proving physically stronger than Crocodine, and resistant to spells slamming Hyunckel and Popp with a brutal tackle that destroys Hyunckel's armor. Flazzard relishes on the power of the armour as he is stronger and faster than before and even nigh immune, thinking he can also take on Myst-Vearn later but setting his sights on Dai first.

Dai is strangely not only able to avoid Flazzard's powerful attacks with ease but is also able to damage Flazzard, as Hyunckel mentions this is an after effect of Dai having mastered all of Avan's techniques. Flazzard attempts to ram Dai with all his strength but is defeated by the perfected Avan Strash which completely annihilated the armour and leaving only Flazzard's left-eye alive. Flazzard berates Myst-Vearn for lying to him, to which the commander replies, the armour was indeed the strongest he had, but that Dai proved to be that much more powerful. Flazzard begged for another chance but Myst-Vearn kills him by stepping on his remains as he had outlived his usefulness and retreated.

Although Flazzard was defeated for good, Hyunckel wonders if Myst-Vearn used Flazzard as a means to test Dai. Popp felt bad about how he was cruelly disposed and suggested building a grave, although Hyunckel stated that Flazzard's badge sufficed as one. With his defeat the forbidden ice did indeed begun to melt but it was not enough to fully free Leona. Popp attempted to melt the ice with his magic but the ice provided resistant as sunset approaches. Maam tries to risk her Magic Bullet Gun by overloading a bullet with two spells. Popp reluctantly agrees to risk the last memento of Avan but he is left without power, forcing Dai to activate his Dragon Knight power to cast a Sizzle spell on the bullet allowing Maam to save Leona at the cost of her gun. With Leona saved and Papnica's forced rejoined, Flazzard was truly defeated for good.

Abilities[]

Flazzard is a master of both Fire and Ice elements being a literal embodiment of both. He can counter fire with ice and vice-versa, effectively rendering him with seemingly no weakness to exploit. He can also absorb both elements with his corresponding half, rendering fire or ice attacks fundamentally ineffective.

A master spellcaster, he can cost the strongest spells of both the Fire and Ice type spells: Kafrizz and Kacrackle. He is able to easily use both elements at once for a powerful magical blast and is able to cast one rapidly after the another allowing him to significantly weaken armour via temperature change and destroy it with a single blow. He even dabble in Forbidden Magic, shortening his life, including the Legendary what he calls 'in ice' putting someone in an ice coffin as long as he lives. His Blizzblaze Curse Field, cast using his Blizzblaze Legion's support, is also Legendary Forbidden Magic, splitting its opponents' strength to a fifth.

One of his most dreaded techniques is the Five Finger Flares Coup de Grâce, which allows him to cast five Kafrizz spells in each of his fingers and catapult them all at once for a barrage of destructive fireballs that can easily destroy an Insulate barrier spell and severely damage everyone behind it. It is a technique close to Forbidden Magic.

As posthumously explanied by Matoriv long after his defeat, due to his original polar nature, Flazzard had an innate potential to master one of the most destructive offensive spells ever created, Medroa, but he fortunately was too young and inexperienced to ever learn the technique.

He can use Blizzblaze Shrapnel Detonation to send bits of ice and flames. The Rock Bullet Shrapnel Detonation is his ultimate technique, dividing his body in small rocky fragments of both elements which he is able to levitate and ram through his opponents for a continuous assault. In this state Flazzard is nigh invulnerable as his only weak point is his core which is fundamentally indistinguishable from all his body debris, but is susceptible to the Air Slash due to being able to cut the unseen. Destroying his core doesn't kill him but makes him unable to control his body and renders him vulnerable to attacks, which lead to his icy half to being melted by Popp.

Upon having his flames converted into Dark Aura, leaving his other bodily remains behind, and being put in a Dead Armour, Flazzard's overall abilities had a drastic change. The power granted by the Dark Fire Energy and armour, along with its enormous size, gave Flazzard incredible physical strength with which he could overpower even Crocodine who is infamous for his titanic strength (although he may have been affected by his previous injuries). Deceptively for his bulk, he was also much faster than he used to be, with his armour also giving him high resistance to spells due to it being made of the same material as the Dark Armour Blade. He used both properties to brutally tackle Hyunckel and Popp, instantly destroying the former's armour in a single slam. He was able to still utilize fire to an extent (likely due to being the only half that survived while donning the armour), by enchanting his fists with fire to increase their power. It is unknown if he was still able to utilize spells freely or he simply preferred to overwhelm his foes through power alone.
