The floodgate key (formerly Watergate Key, Dam Key) is a recurring key item in the Dragon Quest series.

Dragon Quest II[]
The key can be acquired by finding Rogue Fastfinger in the village of Burrowell. Rogue is hiding in a secret passage within his prison cell. By probing the back of the cell, the secret entrance can be found. Rogue gives up the key when talked to by the heroes.
The Floodgate key has only one specific usage. It is used in Slewse to open the floodgate located in the northwest corner of town. Opening the floodgate causes the river to flood, providing access by Ship to the Tower of the Moon.
Dragon Quest VI[]
The key is used to open the floodgate to the east of Castle Swanstone. The king of Swanstone will only give the party the key after Princess Miralda is freed from the cursed mirror.
