The gas canister is a key item in Chapter 5 of Dragon Quest IV. It is a gas lighter than air necessary for making the hot air balloon.

In the past humans used balloons to travel the world, but Estark destroyed all gas canisters, leaving only one buried with himself.
The party finds this last gas canister in Estark's Crypt and afterwards, they take it to a mechanic in Riverton, who uses it to make his prototype balloon.

- Interstingly, in the original artwork the Gas canister had a more primitive look, while in its modern depiction it looks much more similar to a standard real world boiler.
