Dragon Quest Wiki

Grand Master Pang is the head priestess of Angri-La, Rab's former teacher, and a boss character in Dragon Quest XI.

Appearance[]

Pang is a beautiful woman with long, silvery-white hair worn in an elaborate, upswept style with buns and blue eyes. She wears a colorful orange kimono with blue prayer beads, a light-blue magatama-bead necklace, and an ornate hairpiece with bead tassels. She usually carries a "Naughty Stick" paddle to smack her trainees if they're slacking, but wields two during her boss fight.

Despite being older than Rab, having trained him since he was the crown prince, she actually looks very young, the reason why is unknown.

Personality[]

Pang is a strong, charismatic woman that initially comes off as very mean. She’s brutal when teaching, has no restraint when disciplining the Hero and Rab, beats her students up with her Naughty Stick if she thinks they’re slacking, and tends to have a fairly low opinion of people. However, despite her harsh training methods, she ultimately wants her students to succeed and realize their maximum potential.

Biography[]

Dragon Quest XI[]

As per the ancient law between Dundrasil and Angri-La, Pang took on a young Rab as her student. However, he was a rather difficult student, easily given to his taste for perversion, and would purposefully screw up her lessons to be rapped countless times with the "naughty stick", which offended her. He ultimately left before she could teach him the ultimate techniques that he was expected to learn.

Since Angri-La was one of the closest settlements to Yggdrasil, it would've suffered the most from the tree's collapse. However, Pang created a barrier to protect the village, ultimately exhausting her power and killing her, sending her to the Void.

Not much is known about Pang's past, however, during a conversation between her and Rab after he passed her test, he comments she took to the role of Bunny Girl on the cover of his favorite magazine very well and convincingly. Pang states nothing at first but finally comments to Rab that she too was once very youthful and foolish, possibly implying that she was the cover girl bunny before she became the grand master of Angri-La.

Rab would eventually make a pilgrimage back to Mount Pang Lai and Angri-La and enter a state of deep meditation, entering a state between life-and-death and going into the Void. He would ultimately find Pang cast an illusion on him showing him a dream world where Dundrasil never fell. She congratulates him for rejecting the illusion and challenges him to a fight. When he wins, she agrees to train him but makes it clear that his training will be accelerated.

Not long afterwards, the Luminary meets Pang while she serves as gatekeeper in the Void. She informs him that since the Fall, many lost souls have passed under her watch, but none have returned. Rab is off in the distance, practicing the Pearly Gates technique repeatedly, but not quite perfecting it. Pang then explains the nature of the maneuver and why Rab must continually practice it as he searches for a way to defeat the Lord of Shadows, as Erdwin and his party did centuries ago. To his own amazement, Rab successfully executes Pearly Gates and wishes to return to the world, at first perplexed and overjoyed to see his grandson; but Pang says he is not done yet. She teaches the Luminary his Quadraslash technique, then sets him in a soul-to-soul battle with Rab, enhancing the latter's power so as to test the former. The Luminary prevails, and their joint training is complete.

Mordegon penetrates the dimensional barrier in an attempt to eliminate both the Luminary and Rab with dark tree roots. Pang struggles to hold him off, but teaches the heroes their ultimate Pep Power, the Solar Flair. The blast of holy energy drives Mordegon's projection out of the Void, but expends all of the pair's stamina. She then sends them back to the real world, but it's unknown what happens to her soul since then.

When the party goes back in time and defeats Mordegon, she's brought back to life.
