Hadlar is one of the main antagonists in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and the previous Dark Lord, who tried to conquer the world before he was defeated by Avan. However, thanks to the Dark King Vearn, Hadlar returned to life, and was appointed as the supreme Dark Commander of the new Dark Army.

Appearance[]

Hadlar is a tall darkling with silver hair, pointy ears and cyan skin (the 1991 series used light blond hair).

In his Dark Lord appearance as a purple robed sorcerer, Hadlar looks like Dragonlord and his grandson, from Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II respectively, even using the Dragonlord's staff against Avan with Erdrick's helmet. His robe had a plain colour, a white collar stands with a dark band going through, a gem on the hood's forehead and sleeves covering his arms; the pointy tips of his ears protrude from his hood. He had a pearl necklace with round pendant, a skull ring on his left middle finger and closed boots.

After his resurrection, Dark Lord Hadlar has a new robe design with triangle motives around the neck, no collar stand, and no sleeves but keeping the gem on the hood's forehead. His shoulder pads' spikes protrude from the cloak and he has riveted armlets with wrappings crossed into an X shape. He is noted by Brass to look visibly stronger and younger.

Without the cloak, he has metal shoulder pads with one spikes each and attached to a necklace with 5 gems encrusted but is otherwise bare chested, showing a muscular build. He wears black trousers held by a belt with pentagrams motives and a buckle shaped like Vearn's symbol. (the 2020 series replace the pentagrams with the six-point hexagon of Vearn) Similar to his armlets, he has riveted wraps around the ankles with bandages crossed into an X shape and closed shoes.

For winning his death battle against Avan, he was given a new body by Vearn, with a small black marking over his left eye and a large one across the chest. Each time he resurrect, dark tattoos cover his body more and more. He now styles his hair combed back. With this new body, he began wearing a new cloak with shoulder pads and a chest piece with 6 gems encrusted into a hexagon shape. Under it, he had should pads, trousers with a loincloth overgarment held by a belt with a buckle shaped with a 6 point rosette. He also has metal bracelets and shin armours. After withholding an explosion from Baduck's ugly bomb, he discarded his cloak and put on fingerless gloves which he kept.

After being evolved into a Superior Being, he put the Orichalcum Sword of Champions into his right arm and used the Hell's Chain with his left. His limbs now appear metallic and he has three horns on the forehead, mirror the apperance of a King chess piece. He has protrusions grown around the chest and face. He began wearing a helmet with his Dark Commander cloak but stopped wearing gloves.

In his first film animated appearance, he died against the hero with a design corresponding to the resurrected Hadlar on Dermline. 15 years later, he fought Dai as a red evil deity statue with six arms by having his soul inside its singular eye.

Personality[]

For most of his life, particularly during his time as Dark Lord and Dark Commander, Hadlar was the epithome of evil, reigning the world as the Dark Lord spreading destruction and fear whenever he went. Having no qualms about killing scores of people to cement his hold in the world, he was obsessed with power in both strength and authority, showing unmatched ambition, as well as utter contempt and lack of care or pity for those he considered weak, such as humans. Although Hadlar was by no means unintelligent, he was a man driven by force, who preferred to go on the offensive and overwhelm his opponents through sheer power.

Contrary to his reputation, however, Hadlar was a fair fighter and had no qualms about dirtying his own hands to get what he wanted, something even Avan himself respected of him. He was nonetheless not above using trickery at times, putting his two hearted biology to his advantage by faking death against Hyunckel to create an opening.

Hadlar was, however, both power drunk and prideful of his position. Having once being the Dark Lord and currently the Commander of the Dark Army, Hadlar obsessed greatly about his own rank and authority which he sought to protect at all costs, which in turn gave him tunnel vision. Concerning himself with his own safety, made him take decisions that costed the Dark Army, which came to its peak when Hadlar withheld information about Dai being a Dragon Knight from Baran, fearing that if the revelation was exposed, Hadlar's position would be endangered by Baran. A threat that came true when Baran attempted to recruit his son by forcefully wiping his memories, with the ensuing cascade of events leading to not only Dai not joining, but Baran defecting as well, causing great internal turmoil that displeased even the normally patient Vearn.

It is noted by Vearn himself that this attachment to his pride, greatly weakened Hadlar's mental fortitude and was the central cause of his many failures despite being gifted with a powerful body. When the threat of execution loomed, Hadlar became increasingly desperate to protect himself, even falling prey to Zaboera's manipulation and engaging in dishonor. It was Hadlar's subsequent defeat that gave him an eye-opening moment, as he truly realized he could not win as he was, and forced Zaboera to change him into a Superior Being to attain greater power.

As he endured the experimental procedure, Hadlar came to the realization that his enormous pride was useless as it kept him attached to trivial matters, and readied to discard everything he was in order to become stronger. This detachment to everything he stood for was such a great contrast of his previous personality that even Mystvearn realized he had changed for the better and willfully decided to play along with his request. Hadlar had also became significantly more humble towards others, and although greatly confident of his abilities, he did not display the same level of arrogance as before. Furthermore, Hadlar had overtime bcome considerably more honorable on his methods, growing disgusted with Vearn after learning the latter had installed a Black Core within him that he could detonate at any time for a quick an dirty victory. Hadlar was so repulsed, that he downright defected from Vearn's side, helped the disciples of Avan escape alive and openly tried to kill Vearn.

Hadlar's change in personality is reflected in the personalities of Flazzard and his Royal Guard which he created with forbidden magic at different points in the story: as beings created from forbidden magic, they take traits from the soul of their creator, reflecting them in their individual personalities; while Flazzard is thirsty for power and glory, as was Hadlar during the first war, the royal guards fight with honour and fairly, showing how Hadlar changed after becoming a Superior Being.

As his personality changed, Hadlar was no longer concerned with neither power nor world conquest, he simply wanted to fight and defeat Dai, whom he developed a strong but honorable rivalry with, which was reciprocated. So much did Hadlar change, that even the Disciples of Avan, particularly Popp, even felt that Hadlar had become a genuinely good person. Hadlar in turn also did his utmost to save them from Killvearn's traps and was openly remorseful from having caused Avan's death, even praying to the Human God to save Popp from harm.

When Avan was revealed to have survived their previous confrontation, Hadlar was overjoyed that his once rival was still alive and grateful that he could die on his arms, while praising and wishing good fortune on the Disciples of Avan. Even Avan himself was touched by Hadlar's change as the group mourns his loss. However, Hadlar's transition to good was so strong that his soul ended up inhabiting in Hym, the most similar of his Orichalcum Guards to Hadlar allowing him to become a living being of his own and even adopt Hadlar's traits.

In the 2020 anime, his color at the legion commanders' meeting is black, which might represent his soul color.

Biography[]

In the series, it is stated that Hadlar is 357 years old. Fifteen years before the beginning of the series, Hadlar was the Dark Lord who was conquering several territories in the human realms. In one such attack he had given a message in blood to Carl Kingdom that he would kidnap and offer princess Flora as sacrifice. While the troops prepared for the assault, Hadlar appeared and summoned several monsters through Magic Cylinders, while storming the castle in a dragon mount and easily pushing the Carl knights away with his power. Hadlar states he's come to claim Flora with the princess stating his true purpose, to kidnap her and sacrifice her as a means to demoralize the troops due to their powerlessness. Hadlar praises her and orders her to bow down to him, but she refuses, so he gives him two options, to surrender or to die.

A rather young knight known as Avan interrupts while mocking Hadlar for his impolite manners. Hadlar is irritated at his jokester nature but Avan throws a sack of powder, a coagulant which causes monsters to go berserk. To add salt to injury he reveals he did the same to his troops outside which has caused infighting. Angered, Hadlar knocks his dragon with an elbow strike to the head while claiming he won't allow Avan to get away with this mockery. Avan responds in turn angered at the Dark Lord's own actions, leaving Hadlar surprised that a man so seemingly frail as Avan is capable of such strong aura. The two clash with their spells with Avan gaining an upper hand with Sizzle and a kick to Hadlar's gut sending him flying. Avan throws a Kafrizzle but Hadlar easily repels it. He praises Avan for being able to use powerful spells but that with his human power it amounts to nothing.

Hadlar prepares a Kaboom, with Avan unable to avoid it as it will risk the princess and the soldiers getting hurt. Before Hadlar can use it, Roca slices his left arm, to which Hadlar responds by blasting him with his right one. Now unable to use Kaboom without both hands, Hadlar uses a Boom spell instead. Greatly angered at injuring his friend, Avan takes the sword of his friend in a reverse grip and in a moment of desperation unleashes a powerful shining sword swing that catapults Hadlar away. Everyone believes he defeated Hadlar, but Avan reveals this is not the case or else his severed hand would have disintegrated. Hadlar commends Avan for realising this, speaking through the ring in his hands, saying he will retreat for the time being but that as he stands, Avan cannot defeat him, forcing Avan to go on a journey to master the technique he just employed.

Back in his castle, Hadlar regenerates his lost hand in his throne as he is alongside his generals one of which is surprised that someone could wound Hadlar to this extent. Hadlar reveals the one who did was unimpressive but that someone interesting had appeared. Hadlar says the time will come for the generals; Death Troll Gangadia, Treeface Kigiro, Lump Shaman Brass and Hell Knight Bartos, to demonstrate their power to preside over other monsters.

Avan tried to put an end to the fight by time-freezing Hadlar and himself during an eclipse; however, Hadlar's body was recovered by the Dark Army, and with the unseen assistance of Mystvearn, a year and half later, Hadlar and by extention Avan, were freed from the spell by Gangadia.

He was eventually stopped by Avan and his group, and went for a slumber for thirteen years, but not before killing Hyunckel's adoptive father for allowing Avan to pass undefeated.

Birth Arc[]

Avan uses Kamikazee against Hadlar (2020)

After many years, Hadlar returns, now as the commander of the army of the Master Archfiend Vearn, and goes after Avan, forcing Avan to sacrifice himself by using Megante to try to stop him. Hadlar, however, manages to survive. But Dai's hidden power awakens, allowing him to defeat Hadlar. Not long after, Hadlar is resurrected, revealing that the Master Archfiend Vearn gave him an immortal body that can be resurrected every time Hadlar dies, becoming stronger each time.

Clash Arc[]

With is evolved body, Hadlar participates in the assault at Valge Island almost killing Popp and Maam, but they are saved by Hyunckel. Hadlar faces the former Undead Army commander and during the battled has his chest pierced by Bloody Scryde. Hyunckel is almost killed by Hadlar Hell's Claws, but at the last moment the warrior manages to use Grand Cross. When Hyunckel appears to be unconcious, Hadlar tries to finish him, but Hyunckel stabs Hadlar's chest killing the Dark Commander. His body is taken by Mystvearn for revival.

Destiny Arc[]

As a final chance given by Vearn, Hadlar and Zaboera were to attack and kill Dai after he was tired from his battle against Baran at during the night. Having his plans thwarted by Matoriv's arrival, he's gravely injured by Dai's Sizzle. With half of his body lost, Hadlar forces Zaboera to use his secret research on him in order to catch up to the Dragon knight by becoming a Superior Being.

Holy Sword Arc[]

With Zamza's studies, Hadlar becomes a Superior Being permanently, which makes him lose his immortality.

In Zaboera's hideout, he requests Mystvearn to distract Dai's party until the conversion is completed.

Epic Challenge Arc[]

Partially thanks to the Sword of Champions, a mighty orichalcum blade that Zamza had stolen from Romos, that was grafted into his body, Hadlar manages to defeat Dai in the Field of Death, although Dai survives. Vearn then gives him five chess pieces made of Orichalcum, that he uses to create the Hadlar Royal Guards, five warriors loyal to him.

In his Superior Being form, he is able to battle Dai and Baran at the same time, although not Baran in his draconic form. However, it is revealed that when Vearn resurrected Hadlar, he put inside of his body a black core which Vearn uses to try to destroy Baran and Dai. Baran manages to contain most of the explosion, allowing Dai and the others to survive. Hadlar is able to revive through his own will power.

Holy Ordeal Arc[]

Hadlar saves his former rivals Dai and his companions when he attacks Vearn for doing something so underhanded. But after losing his Black Core, his life was already destined to end. Thinking that Hadlar had lost the power to revive and being powered up because of it, Vearn is caught off guard. The Superior Being was very close to defeating Vearn if not for Zaboera intervention, when Block saves his master through castling.

Halo Arc[]

When Dai's party assaults Vearn's Palace, Hadlar arrives with the remaining of his guards to fulfill their true goal, to face the Disciples of Avan one last time and triumph over their rivals. In order to secure a one-on-one duel with Dai, his guards kidnap the bulk of Dai's companions in order to keep them at bay. Leona pleads with him to join forces to defeat Vearn, but Hadlar responds this is not possible as his body is dying and has limited time left, which he wants to use to fight Dai a final time. Dai accepts the challenge, but wonders whether Hadlar is affected by Kaglimmer. Hadlar admits he feels the spell but that it hasn't suppressed any of his power so he can fight at full force freely. The two clash exchanging blows in a fight so vicious it generates enormous amount of combat heat.

As the rest of the Disciples of Avan win over Hadlar's Guard they are left to witness the battle as they are unable to approach. The heat caused by their battle evidences they are equal in strength and that the one who debilitates first will receive the entire heat as well causing catastrophic damage. The two decide to use their strongest moves to settle the fight. Hadlar charges with Ultra Combustion Slash while Dai used Avan Strash Arrow. Hadlar is disappointed at this meager attack, but soon Dai charges and performs the Avan Strash Break, combining both for the Avan Strash Cross overcoming Hadlar. Although Dai believes he has won, Hadlar resucitates himself through sheer tenacity and puts every fiber of his life energy to stand an attack one final time. Dai takes the scabbard of his sword and decides to cast Zapple on his Sword of Dai which as a result of the scabbard's construction amplifies it to the level of Kazap, allowing Dai to use Gigabreak.

The two clash again, but Dai switches at the last moment into Avan Strash position, combining it and Gigabreak to perform the Giga Strash, this time defeating Hadlar definitely. Hadlar accepts his defeat as he begins to decay and request to hold hands with Dai. As soon as that happens a magic artifact activates which is revealed to be a trap placed by Killvearn, which he dubs the Nine of Diamonds. This trap conjures 8 powerful pillars of Underworld flames which will converge at the center, incinerating everything to the point of no ash even remaining, trapping Hadlar, Dai and Popp with it, leaving the latter to keep the flames at bay with his magic. The rest of the Disciples of Avan are left powerless as they attempt everything to dispel the flames but are unable to as the flames can only be countered with magic and Popp is defending the now exhausted Hadlar and Dai.

As the situation grows dire, Hadlar berates them for giving up and reminds them standing in the face of adversity and clinging to hope is the signature trait of the Disciples of Avan. With this newfound resolve, Popp realizes he can use Medroa to extinguish the flames allowing Dai to use Zoom and teleport him and Popp to safety. Popp is initially unable to cast Medroa as it debilitates his stand against the flames, but Hadlar is able to stand up and push them back using his own largely intact magic power reserves. Popp casts Medroa and Dai is able to to cast Zoom. Unfortunately Popp remains in the circle of flames as he did not grab Dai, due to feeling sympathy for Hadlar who had begun to decay in front of his eyes and to whom he grew to respect for he fought with honor and decency despite being his master's murderer. Listening to Popp, Hadlar felt genuine regret over killing Avan and lamented that Popp felt compassion towards a monster like him.

Desperate at the situation Hadlar prayed from the bottom of his heart to the Human God to bring forth a miracle that could save Popp who was an outstanding person who did not deserve death in this manner. As the flames begin to combine, a series of golden feathers fall from the sky in a start formation emanating a bright light which purges the flames. Everyone is left in disbelief at what happen, but only hear a voice telling Popp to not die like that. The voice is revealed to be none other than Avan himself who had survived his encounter with Hadlar, much to the surprise of everyone present.

Avan approaches Hadlar and realizes that he has changed for the better. Finding extrange that the man he used to be enemies with to have saved his pupil, he expresses his gratitude and respect to his former nemesis while cradling him in his arms. Hadlar berates Avan for his thanks and tells him that he is being soft and naive just as he readies his Hell Claws with his right arm, he strikes his arm to find he has pierced through Killvearn's chest as the reaper had turned invisible in order sneak in and kill Avan. Hadlar tells Killvearn he won't be interfering this time as the reaper collapses on the floor. Hadlar's arm soon breaks apart evidencing the last of his strength is gone. As Hadlar crumbles away he warns Avan that Vearn is a dangerous person and that he most become cold and cruel to face him, and that the Disciples of Avan will need his strength and guidance.

Hadlar praises Avan one last time for the Disciples he raised who were worthy adversaries capable of changing him. He passes away with no regrets and even grateful that he gets to die in the arms of his former rival, finding much amusement in the irony that Avan returned upon Hadlar's own demise, before turning to ash. Nonetheless, this wouldn't become the true end of Hadlar as Hym becomes his successor, as the one who resembles Hadlar the most out of all the Royal Guards. Hyunckel speculates that he's Hadlar reborn and that his soul resides in Hym. As proof of that is that, having being created by Hadlar's forbidden magic, Hym should've disappeared when Hadlar died, but he did not, gaining life on his own and, soon after Hadlar's death, and Hym is shown to have the same face and hair as Hadlar, looking like a young Hadlar in silver. It is hinted that this phenomena was possible due to Hym's ability for Promotion which is innate to him as the Pawn allowing him to trascend to a new level of existence.

From beyond the grave, Hadlar was able to assist the heroes one last time, as very own dark ash, left behind when his body expired tha covered Avan as he held him in his arms, became a powerful defence against heat and explosions, ironically saving Avan's life multiple times during his fight with Killvearn.

Abilities[]

As the former Dark Lord, Hadlar was an extremely powerful demon who reigned amongst all monsters. His sole influence is such that he is able to render every monster in the world to evil. Hadlar is both a powerful spellcaster and an adept physical fighter. He is a master of Bang-type spells like Boom and even his Frizz spell is said to be so hot and lasting that it can burn for extended periods of time being made of Hellfire itself, making defensive spells like Kaclang useless against him.

For close-quarter combat, he prefers the use of martial arts. At least since his resurrection, he is able to grow clawed protrusions from his bones into both his knuckles and harden them with magic, making his signature Hell's Claws. In the 1991 anime, he was able to use it even back when he was the Dark Lord. These spikes are so tough and sharp that they can cut through even Hyunckel's armour, made of the second strongest material in the world. As a gift from Vearn himself, he is granted the "Ultimate Body", capable of reviving whenever killed and growing stronger in the process as it is fueled by Vearn's or Mystvearn's Dark Aura. Following his triumph over Avan, he is also able to master the ultimate Heat-type spell, Kasizz in which he summons orbs of intense magic energy before combining them into a giant stream of incredibly destructive power.

As a darkling, Hadlar has shown to possess strong regenerative abilities as he is able to grow back limbs and other such injuries, although it takes time for him to heal as he is typically seen doing so in his throne. He also possesses two hearts, and he can move one of his two hearts from each side of his darkling body.

After when his first encounter with Avan and the warrior Roka, who was able to slice off one of his hands, Hadlar began consuming specially-made magic crystals developed by Zaboera, which eventually turned his very bones into a metal-like alloy, drastically boosting his already enormous fighting capabilities. Still, even with this boost, when he was hit by the nearly perfected Avan Strash, both of his forearms were nearly sliced through, leaving deep gashes into his bones.

Using Legendary Forbidden Magic, he is able to create artificial life from minerals, like Bartos, Grandard, Flazzard and the Orichalcum Guards. His undead troops from his Dark Lord's era also needed him to be alive in order to sustain themselves. He is also very resilient, being able to survive despite having his lower body blown out, and capable of living so long as at least one of his two hearts is in perfect state, as he needs only needing one to stay alive.

After being surgically modified into a Superior Being, Hadlar's power grew exponentially, being more than a match for the likes of Dai and Baran who are Dragon Knights, the theoretical strongest being of the world, with even the latter of which being very surprised by his tremendous power. Hadlar's physical ability has increased to the point even Dai couldn't fully diminish the damage of his blows through Dragonic Aura. Furthermore, due to discarding his ability to turn back into a Darkling body, he had removed the flaw that prevented Superior Beings from casting spells, although it meant he's permanently stuck in a Superior Being body, which lacked the immortality of his previous body, although he regenerated faster than before.

Hadlar's body came with several perks, as his right arm is grafted with the Sword of Champions, a weapon made of Orichalcum whose guard he can open to extend his blade. He was still able to use his Hell's Claw with both hands. He was now a user of Dark Fire Energy, an intense form of Dark Aura that burns like hellfire which he could channel into his Sword. He was also able to channel it into his Hell's Claw.[1] Using this aura, Hadlar was capable of using his strongest attack, Ultra Combustion Slash in which he imbued his sword with extreme amounts of Dark Fire Energy before unleashing it in a single devastating strike whose power rivaled that of Gigabreak.

His left hand could open a cavity, from which he could catapult his Hell's Chain, a hard and fairly powerful tentacle-like extension. However, his transition into a Superior Being came with fatal consequences: due to his body being ingrained with a Black Core prior to his transformation, upon receiving the surgery, the Black Core became unstable which affected his lifespan, leading to fits of bloody coughs, and giving him limited time.

During his battle against Baran he was shown to be weaker than his Dragonoid form and although defeated, Hadlar was able to revive himself through his own power, albeit, his ability to do so was limited and couldn't fully resuscitate himself eternally due to his limited life. By reviving himself he was also able to become stronger like he did previously, to the point he is even a match to Vearn himself and was able to nearly kill his older self, were not for Zaboera's intervention. Albeit, it should be noted Vearn's magic power had diminished at that point, as it was being absorbed at an alarming rate by his signature weapon, the Staff of Edacity, and even then, Vearn had his true power sealed away. Nonetheless, Hadlar held the potential to eventually surpass Dark King Vearn himself, but the full extent of which was never fully shown. As a user of Hellfire, his very own dark ash, left behind when his body expired, became a powerful defense against heat and explosions, ironically saving Avan's life multiple times during his fight with Killvearn.

Hadlar is one of the bosses encountered both during story mode, as well as in the Temple of Recollection. He has two form, one in his initial, weaker form he had during his fight to the death with Avan on Dermline Island; the other, slighty stronger variant, is the one after Dai grieviously wounded him with the Avan Strash. In this second form, he is able to cast an unblockable Kasizz.
