The Hero's sibling is a major character in Dragon Quest X. Although in truth not related by blood with each other, they and the Hero truly consider each as siblings. While initially inexpert, eventually, thanks to their experiences while time-travelling, the Sibling became a master Alchemist without compare, truly worthy to being called the Legendary Alchemist of Astoltia.

Biography[]

Born 8 years before the game's events, they were expected to be the legendary alchemist of Tenton but failed almost every time they tried to make something, one of the few exceptions being when they managed to create a silly-looking hat with a great success. One day Lady Tenda, the one who had realized that they would eventually be the new legendary alchemist, had a vison foretelling that Nelgel the Netherlord would attack the village with his army under orders from his shadowy ally and destroy it, but the use of a Tensu Flower could potentially save them if brought to the village. The Sibling accompanied the Hero and Singh to find the flowers inside a nearby cave, fighting monsters along the way until they see Bedora destroying the flowers, stating he was under orders to make sure Tenton couldn't be saved. After a fight, he breathed one last devastating dark breath to destroyed all the flowers, with the exception of a single one, which the group broung back to the village.

By the time they arrived however, the monsters had already attacked Tenton, destroying everything and killing Tenda. The Sibling themselves were almost killed, but the Hero accidentally casted a spell that sended them 60 years into the past, saving them from Nelgel, who finished destroying the village and sealed Rendacia in darkness; however, due to their amateur use of the power of time, the Hero had not simply sent their sibling into the past, but they had actually accidentally cursed them with a time-travelling curse. Afterwards, the Sibling were seen laying unconscious on the ground until a man tripped over their body while chasing a Woebergine.

Taken in by that man, the rude but kind Isshou, also a fellow alchemist, and his daughter Liryol, the Hero's Sibling talent for alchemy finally began to bloom thanks to the use of the far better Alchemy Pot, saving Liryol from the Mellazo Fever, a rare disease from Grand Zetannia, by developing a cure. Among other things, the Hero's Sibling defeated the evil Balzack and made their way back to the Tenton of the past, where they helped with one of their creation the previous priestess perform the ritual necessary to pass her duties to her successor, a younger Tenda, explaining why Tenda knew of their talent and had such high expectations for them. Tenda, already possessing divinatory powers, knew the Sibling had traversed through time, and advised them to pray in order to make their feelings reach the Hero in the future; doing so, made the silly hat, the only thing that they had originally been able to produce while living in Tenton, appear to the Hero in the present day.

At some point, the Sibling co-developed with Isshou, under the request of Haruka the Ship Shaper, a formula to strenghten said ancient magic of boat summoning. A time travelling Hero, along with an adult Eruju, eventually came for the formula, but they were forced back to the present day before they could meet with the Sibling, which was out on an errand at the time.

Eventually, the Sibling, Isshou and Liryol, following the request from Tenda, began working hard to synthetize a much, much stronger breed of Tensu Flowers with alchemy; however, their work in developing the sacred flowers had the effect of greatly slowing down the aging process of the group, with the Sibling in particular being the one on which said after-effects had the most remarkable results, due to their longer exposure.

As Tenda advised to leave the island due to the danger that creating the flowers may pose, eventually Liryol and the Sibling relocated elsewhere, leaving Isshou behind after selling their house to fund their voyage. However, just as predicted, upon hearing about the group's intention to create Tensu Flowers, the demon Bezebu began stalking them in an attempt to destroy them for good; he attacked the Sibling and Liryol many times, eventually forcing the two of them to go to separate ways in order to keep Liryol safe from the danger, with Liryol remaining on Made Isle. Bezebu was never able to find them again nor he was able to learn of the location of the new laboratory, not even after decades of searches, only succeding in locating the lab when the Hero themselves eventually came for the stronger flowers, with Bezebu meeting his end by their hands.

10 years before the present time, the Sibling finally completed the improved Tensu Flowers, and sent a letter to Liryol informing her to have sent the key of the laboratory, Peals of the Wind she had created, to Isshou via a letter, and then left her creation, Hana-Chan to guard the door from strangers until she would receive said pearls, hopefully by the hands of the Hero, and also asking her to return the Alchemy pot to Isshou once her first task was completed; the Sibling also at some point created Nico-chan as well.

However, after sending the letters to Liryol and Isshou and leaving a letter in the lab for the Hero, the Sibling once again unwillingly jumped through time due to their curse re-activating, ending up in the Dwachakka of 3000 years ago. There, the Sibling met with the time displaced Quad, and the two of then had began working together to reunite with their loved ones; however, Quad desperation to save his kingdom drove him to take amoral actions in the Urubea Empire, and imprisoned his former ally, forcing them to begin working on the construction of the Time-Trotter's Trinket. Meeting again with the Hero, who was time-travelling themselves with the complete Time-Trotter's Trinket in order to stop Kyronos, they tried to stop Quad, but the arrival of the brainwashed Padre forced the sibling to activate their own Cube, disappearing in another time period.

With the Time-Trotter's Trinket, the Sibling attempted to stop the destruction of Tenton, but failed miserably multiple times, eventually reaching the conclusion that it was an inevitable fate.

Eventually, the Sibling returned to the present time, and the next time the pair of siblings actually met face to face, for the first time after being separated from the Hero's perspective, for reasons unknown at the time, the sibling kidnapped both Princess Anlucia and Prince Laguas, and then seemingly opposed the Hero while they were journeying through Nagaland; in truth, they were aware of Nadraga's secret plot to use the Vessels of God to revive himself, and their actions, done with the assistence of Crow, who was in truth a resurrected Singh, were attempts to prevent it, having had a premonition that the Hero would die if things proceeded, even leading a small group of Dragon people, the Knights of Gale, against the Cult of Nadraga.

They were ultimately unsuccessful, and the Hero died as it was predicted; however, they were also returned to life yet again thanks to the help of the Vessels of Gods, and Nadraga was slain for good. After that, the Sibling were wished away once again to a different era by the curse, leaving behind the Time-Trotter's Trinket, which allowed the Hero to travel through time themselves.

The version of the Sibling from after the battle with Nadraga appeared in the rift through time known as the Labyrinth of Time Prison, having aimlessly wandered there for a long time. However, after reuniting with the Hero and Kyururu, once again they were whisked to parts unknown due to the time-travelling curse.

They began aimlessly visiting various time periods of the past, even ending up creating some of the objects that the Hero would eventually use, while attempting to help people as much as possible with their alchemy, including creating the evil-repelling tuning forks of the Wenna Islands and repairing the tunnelling mechanism of the Dwarven city of Dolworm, thusly accidentally becoming themselves the Legendary Alchemist they were supposed to be the successor of.

Finally, the Hero's sibling ended up in the Netherworld of 340 years ago, where they were nursed back to health by the Demon Oracle and, after the latter had already selected Maldragora as the next supreme ruler of the Netherworld, chosen to be the next Demon Oracle. With the contract of recognition with Jagonuba finalized, the Sibling, now the Demon Oracle, became immune to the demon miasma's corruption and were finally freed from the time-travelling curse, but they were now susceptible to Jagonuba's control. The Sibling concealed the passing of the Demon Oracle's position, by posing as their predecessor thought use of a costume with their visage, masking their true human visage in the process. Having realized the truth behind the constant demonic invasions, and having come to love the Netherworld as a second home during their stay, the Hero's sibling, as the new Demon Oracle, tried to put a stop to the conflict, by appointing their sibling, Hero, as the new Great Demon King, then trying to play the role of villain in order to make the Netherworld and Astoltia join forces against the true threat of Jagonuba, while they attempted to strenghten the seal on the ancient evil.

Unfortunately their actions as the Demon Oracle accidentally lead to the ultimate resurrection of Jagonuba, as the container of Jagonuba's sealed soul, Nalasia, was unwittingly brought too close to the sealed body of Jagonuba, allowing him to take control of Nalasia; the Hero's sibling then assisted the best they could their older sibling, and all of their allies in their battle against the ancient force of darkness, although their countless years spent, and their many grave mistakes done, they had began doubting to have the right to be called the sibling of the Hero. The Hero reaffirmed their bond with their sibling and, after Jagonuba's ultimate defeat, the Hero's sibling, while initally resolved to continue their duties as the Demon Oracle in the Netherworld, was eventually convinced to return to live in the rebuilt Tenton. They even went to visit Isshou and Liryol, who were overjoyed so finally seeing the Sibling again after so long.

A short time later, the Hero's sibling once again assisted their olden brethen by providing their alchemical prowess, alongside the two other master alchemists from Great Etene, Wagmika and Linker, in the construction of a doll necessary to free the Hero's biological father, Padre, from his imprisonment in the rift of time.

Trivia[]

  • The outfit they wear from Version 3 onwards references Morrie's usual outfit from Dragon Quest VIII.
  • They are named Mina (ミーナ) in promotional material.
  • The original release of Version 1, included an extended playable prologue section done while offline from the internet, where the story followed the Hero's sibling after they were sent back in time during Tenton destruction, up to the point where they return to a earlier version of their village and meet a younger Tenda. From Version 4 onward, this mode is no longer accessible to any of the currently supported versions of Dragon Quest X, and can only be played via emulation of the original Wii release. Upon completion, the Silly hat would be given to the Hero.
    • However, the events of Offline Mode are not being scrapped: instead, in order to tie-in with the main story in the online versions, when Version 4 was added, the most important plot points of Offline mode were summarized in a series of 3 books scattered around Tenton isle and Made isle. Also, now it is after all of these books have been read that the silly hat will be received by the Hero.
