iOS is a mobile operating system developed and maintained by the American technology and media conglomerate Apple Inc.

Debuting in mid-2007 as iPhone OS alongside the original iPhone, iOS has since evolved into a family of closely related yet distinct platforms developed for various Apple Inc. devices — including the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, which runs its own dedicated system called visionOS. Meanwhile, macOS powers the company’s range of desktop and laptops.

Applications and games for these systems are primarily distributed through the App Store, accessible on iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS across most major regions worldwide.

Lifecycle policy[]

Apple generally supports its hardware for up to seven years or across three major iOS releases, whichever is longer. With this in mind, iOS 26 and its derivatives run on hardware as old as 2019's iPhone 11, matching similar policies from rival device makers such as Samsung, Google, and Honor.[1][2]
