Chapter 1[]
The story is a retelling of the first 42 episodes of the 2020 Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai anime adaptation.
The story starts with Baran's confrontation against Dai, which results in latter's having all of his memories shattered to pieces. In order to recover his memories, Dai internally re-traces back all of his adventures up to that point from the very start.
Dai grew up on the pieceful Dermline Island, among harmless wild monsters, under the care of Brass the Lump shaman. One day a group of humans, who claimed to be the hero's party but were in truth fakes, tried to abduct a good friend of Dai, Gomechan, and present it to the King of Romos, due to its rarity, but they were defeated by Dai. Impressed by his earnest courage, the King offered Dai a token of honor for his bravery. Shortly after, the princess of the Kingdom of Papnica, Leona, came to the island to perform a ritual. However, the advisors that had accompanied her turned out to be scoundrels, and tried to kill the princess; Dai fiercely defended her against the creatures summoned by the aggressors, ultimately saving her after a mysterious mark appeared on his forehead. Once the ritual was complete, Leona departed from the island, deeply impressed with Dai's strenght.
A few days after her departure, another crysis occurred, when all monsters on the island, including Brass, began going berserk and rampage against one another. Temporarily returned to sanity by Dai's cries, Brass informed the boy that the sudden change in behavior by the monsters, meant that the Dark Lord had returned. He urged Dai to flee the island, afraid that the monsters would turn on him, but he refused to leave his friends in trubble. In that moment, a strange man, accompanied by a boy, arrived on the shores of the island; impressed by Dai's words, the man began to run at high speed across the island, tracing on the ground with his sword's scabbard a magic circle, and then casted the spell Glimmer, which expurged the Dark Lord's evil influence and returned the monsters to normal. The man was Avan, and was tasked by Papnica's royal family to coach Dai in the ways of being a Hero, just like the boy who was accompaning him, Popp, also was.
Avan offered Dai an extra hard teaching course that would make Dai into a hero in seven days, and the boy began to train, achieving impressive results in rapid succession. On the third day, Avan tested Dai while transforned into a dragon thanks to the Puff! spell, and against his anticipations, the boy was able to scratch his steel hide. Just then however, a powerful malevolent force penetrated Glimmer's barrier, revealing itself to be Dark Lord Hadlar, who had come to enact his revenge against Avan, as he was the legendary hero who fifteen years prior had killed him and put a stop to his reign of terror on the world. Avan hoped that, with Hadlar showing in person, he would be able to put a stop to the darkness sooner than he thought but, to his shock and horror, Hadlar not only proved to having grown much, much stronger than before, but he also revealed to not being the Dark Lord anymore, as he now served as Dark Supreme Legion Commander of Dark King Vearn's Dark Army, a being several times stronger than him, that had resurrected him and granted a more powerful body. Dai tried helping his master, but Hadlar easily deflected his blow; while initially he had considered sparing Avan's students, after noticing that Dai had actually managed to draw blood out of him, he tried to destroy them, which forced Avan to shield them with his body.
Put on the back foot, Avan, after encasing Dai, Popp, Brass and Gomechan with the spell Kaclang in order to protect them, gave his students an Insignia of Avan as proof of their graduation, left some encouraging words to both Dai and Popp, and then sacrificed himself by unleashing the Megante spell, trying to take Hadlar with him. Unfortunately, Hadlar's new body proved to be too resiliant, and while wounded by the act, he survived; enraged by the situation, Dai once again awakened his mysterious crest, and forced the wounded Hadlar to retreat by performing Avan's signature move, the Avan Strash. Left alone, the group mourned the loss of Avan, with Popp in particular being devastated by the loss of his master.
The next morning, Dai left the island in order to avenge Avan's death, and defeat the Dark King. While initially it would had appeared that Popp would not have joined him, the boy rushed to the shore, and carched up to Dai's boat just in time, and the two set out to reach the near Romos Kingdom.
Chapter 2[]
After reaching the shore, Dai and Popp entered the massive Dark Forest, and ended up lost within it. Witnessing a young girl being threatened by monsters, the duo intervened, saving her. Just then, a young woman, Maam showed up, finishing off the remaining monster; Maam, as thanks for saving Mina, offered the boys to spend the night at her nearby Nayle Village; Popp however, stressed by the events of the last few days, scoffed at the idea, instead opting to reach Romos in order to pass the night in the mush more luxurious castle, dragging off with him an apologetic Dai.During that night, Dai and Popp, still lost in the forest, were ambushed by the Beast King Crocodine, Legion Commander of the Furfang Legion. The brute had been tasked directly from Hadlar to take out Dai, and was now looking forward to see what kind of strenght the boy possessed to actually being able to wound Hadlar.
Unable to take the pressure, Popp fled, convinced that dai would be fine on his own, but accidentally run into an Infanticore. He was rescured by Maam, who had come to help the boys out of the forest, and was subsequently chewed off by her for leaving Dai behind, in the process, Popp discovering that Maam also was one of Avan's disciples. Maam, then forced Popp to run back to Dai, and the two rushed to his aid.
Meanwhile, Dai had fought bravely, but had fallen victim of Crocodine's Heat Breath, ending up under Paralysis. Just as Crocodine was about to finish him off Maam arrived, healing Dai with a shot from her Magic Bullet Gun, and together the group was able to force Crocodine to retreat, after Dai had permanently scarred one of his eyes.
Taking a rest at Nayle Village, Maam told Dai and Popp of her memories of Avan, and of her graduation gift, the Magic Bullet Gun still unaware of her master's fate. Meanwhile Crocodine, still steaming for his loss against a mere child, was approached by Zaboera, the Legion Commander of the Mystic Legion, who had seen Crocodine's defeat through one of his Heyedra; he had condescendly come to offer his aid. After hearing his plan, Crocodine was enraged by the underhandedness, whishing instead to defeat Dai fair and square, but after some goading from Zaboera, who implyed that the Beast King would lose the respect of the other Legion Commanders and his seat among them, Crocodine, reluctantly, agreed, and took the object Zaboera handed to him,
Back at Nayle Village, Dai asked the local village elder to train him in magic, in the process involuntarily revealing to a listening Maam of Avan's demise. The next day, despite it not being perfect, Dai was nonetheless able to master the Frizz spell. Watching from afar, Maam felt conflicted, torn between her desire to travel with them and avenge her master, or to stay and defend the village. As the boys were leaving the village, Maam's mother, Leira, approached her daughter, and told her to follower her heart, just like she had done back in the day by following Avan as one of his companions. Encouraged by the other villages, Maam thanked them, and rushed to catch up to Dai and Popp, joining the group and their quest.
Reaching Romos by nightime, the group decided to pass the night at the local inn, where by sheer coincidence they run in the group of Fake Heroes, who swore to having changed their ways; as such the two groups decided to bury the hatchet and pass the night under the same roof. However, at dawn, Crocodine, who had decided to abbandon his pride as a warrior in favor of victory, rallied his Furfang Legion and lauched a massive invasion of Romos, taking the king hostage in order to lure Dai out. Dai rushed to his rescue, and Maam tried to convince Popp to follow them; however, paralized by his fear of the Dark Army, Popp refused, convinced that Dai's strenght would be enough. Disgusted, Maam left without Popp; meanwhile, Dai had reached the castle, and began his fight with Crocodine, while Zaboera, through one of his Heyedra, observed.
Shocked that Dai had learned a spell in such a short time, Corocodine realized just how much dangerous the boy was for the Dark Army and, while Maam, who had just arrived, was treating the King Romos with a Midheal, Crocodine revealed his secret weapon, a Magic cylinder containing a captured and brainwashed Brass. Unable to fight against his adoptive parent. Dai was neutralized, with his words unable to reach the brainwashed Brass, who spread discord among the castle guards with his Fuddle spell. before blasting Dai with Frizzle. Maam and the castle guards chided Crocodine for his hypocrisy about the warrior's pride, only for the latter to respond that he had already had discarded it. Trying to end the fight, Crocodine unleashed his strongest attack the Beast King Anguish Blast, which severly injured everyone present.
Seeing the attack from afar, Popp wondered if Dai and Maam were in danger, but tried to push away his feelings of guilt, before noticing one of the members of the Fake Heroes party, the mage Masopho, was still in the room. Convinced that the mage was there to loot the room, Popp tried to stop him, only for Masopho to point out the hypocrisy of Popp in calling himself a student of Avan when he abbandoned his companions earlier. Using his crystal ball to show him how his friends were faring, Popp saw how bad the situation was, with Dai gravely injuried, and Maam unable to heal him due to being restrained by the Heyedra. Masopho spurned Popp to run to his friends aid, pushing past the latter's fear of death by repeating the words of his old master. Masopho himself was once similar to Popp, also dreaming of being an ally of justice, but likewise being struck by fear and abbandoning his companions multiple times, until he had become what he was now. Hearing these words, Popp snapped out of his crippling fear, and rushed to Dai and Maam's aid, reaching them just as Crocodine was about to deliver a lethal strike to Dai.
Uninterested and unimpressed of the once cowardly mage, Crocodine tried to make Popp flee, but the boy steeled himself and goaded the Beast King into a one-on-one fight. Popp was no match for Crocodine, and was badly hurt, but still pushed through in order to give Dai time to recover. Suddently, remembering master Avan, Popp came up with a plan: he smashed his magic rod against the Beast King's armour, and then discreetly lauched its fragments around Brass, until they formed a magic circle. Popp casted Glimmer, thusly freeing Brass of the mind control and giving Dai freedom to fight. Crocodine pointed out that now Popp, without either physical or magical strenght left, was completely defenceless, but Popp was okay with it, confident that Dai was more than enough strong to take on the Beast King, and content with dying without having abbandoned his friends. Crocodine, couldn't help to being deeply impressed by Popp's courage, and felt shame in having himself thrown away his honor out of fear, pondering if, in the end, victory would be worth the cost of his pride. Through the Heyedra, Zaboera yelled at Crocodine, spurning him in finishing of Popp; however, just as an apologetic Crocodine was baout to strike Popp, Gomechan's tears re-awakened Dai, who in a mighty rage, unleashed his mysterious mark, which energies disintegrated the Heyedra, freeing Maam from her restaint.
Now strong enough to block Crocodine's axe with just one hand, and then throw him away against the wall, Dai gained the upper hand, while Popp tended to Maam. The Beast King, now realizing the true extent of Dai's strenght, tried to unleash one last desperate attack to win, confident that, even with Dai now strong as steel, he wouldn't be able to survive a close range Beast King Anguish Blast. As he readied the attack, Popp launced a nearby sword to Dai; Crocodine launced his attack, but Dai dodged and countered with an Avan Strash, which slashed Crocodine's chest, lethally wounding him.
Acknowledging his defeat, and expressing regret over having resorted to dirty tactics, he briefly directed his attention to Popp, saying how the boy had taught him a lesson on the true value of pride, before returning to speak to Dai, all the while nearing himself to the hole in the castle walls created earlier. He expressed of having no regret in having been bested by someone as strong as Dai, and even being proud of, before once again lamenting his foolish obsession with victory. Bidding farewell to Dai, asking him to never lose, Crocodine lauched himself out of the castle walls, plummeting into the void to his probable demise, signalating to his troops the end of the seige, and leaving Dai and his friends happy for the victory but somber for the beast King's end.
Shortly after, King Romos officially praised the young heroes that had saved the kingdom, particularly Dai, and bestowing him the title of "Hero". Dai however, decided to reject it, feeling of being too inexperieced for it just yet; impressed by his resolve, the King of Romos accepted, and presented the three young heroes new sets of gear and weapons, before officially unveiling them to the cheering population, while Popp and Maam made up for their previous argument.
Chapter 3[]
Deciding to head towards the Kingdom of Papnica next, the Disciples of Avan took a ship to traverse the sea. While en route, the captain expressed how the continent of Holkia, home of Papnica, was in the past the main base of operations of the Dark Lord Hadlar fifteen years prior, and how as such, it had seen the fiercest of battles. Worse, now a legion of immortal monsters had come to seize Papnica.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, the cruel Flazzard had just finished off some warriors, disappointed in the frailty of the human body, and confident that the country was now good as his; he however received from his minions an urgent message from a Heyedra, wich ordered for all Legion Commanders to quickly gather at their base, Sovereign Rock Castle, in response of Dai ahving defeated Beast King Crocodine. Understanding the situation, Flazzard redied himself to depart, but not before ordering his minions to destroy every single trace of human activity in the country, and wipeout the entire population leaving no survivors. At Sovereign Rock Castle, Flazzard was met by Zaboera; Flazzard mocked Crocodine's defeat, but Zaboera, while still somewhat underplaying the Beast King, warned that Dai was not to be underestimated, revealing Crocodine's body suspended in Resurrection Fluid, with his chances of survival being fifty percent at best; Flazzard himself having to admit that if whoever did so much damage was truly just a child, then they were a true monster.
The two were approached by Baran, and Flazzard expressed to him his insincere sympathies, as Baran had just a few days prior being dispatched to take down the Kingdom of Ringaia, only to be summoned back so soon, but Baran scoffed, as he had already managed to topple Ringaia and destroy it. At the Left Shoulder Chamber, the Legion Commanders, including the enigmatic Mystvearn, and the Supreme Commander Hadlar, reunited, but Hadlar apologized to his peers, as, while he had intended to for all of them to reunite and plan an attack against Dai, Dark King Vearn had instead delivered a direct order: the Legion Commander Hyunckel had given the task to defeat the boy, hence his absence to the meeting, and the others were forbidden to interfere.
Meanwhile, Dai and his friends reached the port town of Papnica, only to find it completely razed to the ground, with no sign of the population, or of princess Leona. The group was ambushed by a pack of Skeletons only for them to being defeated by a young man in a white cloak using the Avan Style Sword Technique: Earth Slash
