Jagonuba is the true main villain of Dragon Quest X. A primordial source of evil and darkness and mortal enemy of the Goddess Luciana, he has tried to take over Astoltia since time immemorial. More correctly, his actual name is Jia Gonuba, as he was a member of the Jia Kut Clan, an interstellar invading force bent on destroying the world in order to feed off the Power of Creation.

Biography[]
When Luciana fled the Eternal Cradle with the power of creation bestowed upon her by the previous Creator Deity, Jia Gonuba was sent to pursue her.
After the creation of Astoltia, just the night before the creation of a powerful shield that would had masked the world from the Jia Kut Clan eyes forever, he arrived in his spacecraft, crashlanding and embedding itself deep beneath the planet's surface in a place that would later be known as Doomsday's Garden. Jia Gonuba began to use his power to turn all life in Astoltia into minerals, the same fate that befell the Eternal Cradle. Four sages in the service of Luciana: Gardo, Zark, Scor, and Mez, were sent to investigate, and after witnessing the mineralization for themselves, used the power of the Goddess bestowed upon them to seal away this ability. However, when Jia Gonuba's mineralization powers were sealed, it caused his body to mutate, turning it into a "grotesque lump of flesh", and causing it to spew out massive quantities of a magic-infused fog that would come to be known as "demon miasma".
The miasma infected and mutated everything it came into contact with, and was spreading at a rate faster than it could be contained. Left with no other options, the sages begged Luciana to cut off the infected land from the rest of Astoltia to halt the spread of the miasma, and the Goddess reluctantly agreed. The infected land would become the Netherworld, and the inhabitants that were left behind would be mutated by the demon miasma and become monsters and the first Demons.
After the land was sundered, Jia Gonuba, his name now distorted into Jagonuba, created seven beings from his own body and power known as the Dark Deities, and sent them to Astoltia to destroy it. They waged war against Luciana's children, the seven racial gods, and the land was devastated until Luciana herself defeated the Dark Deities and sealed them away in shrines across Astoltia. After the Dark Deities' defeat, Jagonuba himself invaded Astoltia and engaged Luciana in battle, a fight that would last for thousands of years. Sensing the collapse of the world if the fight were to continue, Luciana used her final resort: a powerful curse that would separate Jagonuba's soul from his body, but would do the same to her as well. Jagonuba's body was sealed away in the Temple of Jagonuba, inside Demon Mountain, the tallest peak in the Netherworld, while his soul was sealed inside the body of a human named Nalasia, who was in turn sealed inside a statue of the Goddess inside Rufa Temple, located within the River of Light, the remains of Luciana's body.
As the years went on, Jagonuba's slumbering body continued to produce demon miasma, fueled by the anger and grudges of the demons living in the Netherworld. A demon by the name of Goda noticed this, and sealed the entrance to the Temple of Jagonuba by constructing Goda Temple on top of it. He then charged his son, Jyadain, with guarding the temple, as he led an army of demons in their first invasion of Astoltia, to prevent their negative emotions from agitating Jagonuba's body and producing more demon miasma. Goda became known as the first Great Demon King, and Jyadain would become the Oracle, the mediator between future Great Demon Kings and Jagonuba, granting the former the latter's power and encouraging them to invade Astoltia to continue relieving the pressure in the Netherworld.
Through much of the story, Jagonuba's identity was concealed, and his presence was shown only though the many dark hands he controlled, when they appeared to transform Nelgel into the Netherfiend, Great Demon King Maldragora into his Worldmaker form, and the fallen dragon god Nadraga, the last of which joined him to try to make the Dragons rule over the other races. Jagonuba's first formal appearance came when the Hero and their party entered the Temple of Jagonuba in pursuit of the Oracle. In the presence of Nalasia, the vessel containing his soul, Jagonuba's body began to stir, calling forth Daviyaga, the Dark Deity of Tyranny. After Daviyaga's defeat, the body absorbed Daviyaga's remains and began to wake up, but was stalled by Sage Marine.
After the Hero helps Illusia in her trials to reawaken the Goddess Luciana, Jagonuba reveals that he has already consumed Nalasia's consciousness from the inside, and proceeds to awaken one of the sealed Dark Deities: Yafagil, the Dark Deity of Forbiddance. Nalasia, Pujyu, and Yafagil then take Illusia with them to Rufa Temple to carry out the ritual to reunite the souls of the two great gods with their bodies. Nalasia reveals to the protagonist that by resurrecting Luciana, they have revived Jagonuba as well, due to the nature of the curse that was placed on both of them. With body and soul reunited, Jagonuba fights Luciana, and after absorbing the remains of two more Dark Deities, defeats the Goddess before flying off to Doomsday's Garden, where he plans to gather all the world's demon miasma to unleash as a spear of doom to destroy both the Netherworld and Astoltia.
Jagonuba attempts to capture the Hero after they freed their sibling, who was acting as the Oracle, from Jagonuba's control. Jagonuba wanted to study the Hero to learn what made them so special, but after convincing from Shaka, chose to take him instead. When the Hero arrives at the bottom of Doomsday's Garden to rescue Shaka, Jagonuba reveals that Shaka would have been chosen to become the next Great Demon King if the Hero and their sibling had not interfered. He was intrigued by Shaka's idea of cooperation, interpreting it as a fusion of light and darkness, thinking it would finally bring an end to the seemingly endless struggle between him and Luciana. Jagonuba forced his evil energy into Shaka, transforming him into a dragon-like monster and warping his ideals, but the Hero and their party managed to bring Shaka back to his senses.
At the heart of Jagonuba's ship, the Great Source of Darkness finally engages the Hero himself. After a lengthy battle, Luciana attempts to finish off Jagonuba with the power of creation, only for Jagonuba to begin absorbing that power into himself, claiming that light exists only to fuel the darkness, and that true cooperation can only be achieved when darkness consumes everything. Absorbing Luciana's light causes Jagonuba's body to mutate again as he claims he has achieved true cooperation and perfection by embodying both light and darkness, and proceeds to begin devouring the world, starting with Shaka and the Hero. However, with the combined powers of the prayers of all life in both Astoltia and the Netherworld, the Hero unleashes a massive Kazapple attack on Jagonuba, easily piercing his dark hands. As Jagonuba's body is destroyed, he comes to the realization that cooperation is not the forced union of light and darkness, but the willing intertwining of many individuals with shared beliefs, declaring it to be "an unfathomable power, capable of destroying even the gods", before exploding and dissipating.
Unfortunately, due to a sinister plot from some Angels, corrupted by the red mist left floating in the old ruins underneath the Angel's home of Tenseikyo, the Kia Kut Clan would eventually find Astoltia again, beginning a new battle for survival. The leader of the clan, Jia Red Genos, even backhandedly praised the Hero for defeating Jia Gonuba, as well as the newly arrived Jia Lumina, but was confident the world of Astoltia would be destroyed thanks to the Evil Eye, as floating super-weapon. However thanks to the aid of Jia Rube, who rightfully felt betrayed by Genos after he tried to use her and her brother, Jia Saphir, as sacrificial pawns, resulting in Saphir's demise, the Hero and his celestial allies were able to covertly board the super-weapon. The following battle was hard fought and costed the lives of many allies, but they were successful in not only disabling it, but also they took Jia Red Genos down, ending the threat for Astoltia by the Jia Kut, as well as Jagonuba's evil legacy, for good.
