Biography[]

Jair was once an ordinary villager in the Netherworld when his hometown was destroyed by the invading army of a nearby nation. Just as the soldiers were about to kill Jair, he was saved by Archfiend Valeria and the forces of Valdista. Completely enthralled by Valeria's beauty and ruthlessness in battle, Jair immediately swore loyalty to her and worked his way up the ranks of Valdista's military, until he finally earned a position as one of Valeria's retainers alongside Beltro.

The Hero and Shaka meet Jair in Valdista, where he is arguing with a merchant who is running late with a shipment of Miasmite for the army due to a gang of outlaws occupying a nearby mine. Shaka offers to help Jair reclaim the mine in exchange for arranging an audience with Valeria, to which he agrees. When confronting the outlaws in the mine, they mock Valeria for sending her "pretty-faced puppy" to deal with them, which angers Jair. After defeating the bandits, he prepares to execute them until they beg for mercy and swear to serve Valeria, but just as Jair is about to spare them, Valeria arrives and executes the outlaws as retaliation for another crime they committed.

After Valeria's audience with the Hero and Shaka ends, she leaves Valdista Castle, putting Jair and Beltro in charge until she returns, and not saying where she is going. Curious, Jair followed her in secret and discovered an orphanage that Valeria had built in a hidden location, and witnessed her smiling and playing with the children there. Seeing this shattered Jair's fantasy of Valeria being a cold, merciless witch of ice, leading him to believe the children were "corrupting" Valeria's purity, and were a threat to the glory of Valdista.

Later, Jair planted part of the Miasmite recovered from the mine near the orphanage and detonated it, shrouding the building in demon miasma and making it look like an accident. When Valeria heard of the incident, she immediately rushed to the orphanage to try and rescue the children, but only found one survivor who was on the verge of death. As she tried to save the dying child, Jair arrived with a bottle of medicine, offering it to the child. This drew Beltro's suspicion, who noted that Jair would never put anyone before Valeria. When Valeria tried to take the medicine first, Jair knocked the bottle out of her hand and the contents spilled onto the ground, revealing it to be poison. Jair tried to shift blame for the poison to Shaka and the Hero, but Valeria became even more suspicious of Jair, asking why he thought the orphanage was important to her when the only people who should have known of her connection to it were Beltro, Shaka, and the Hero. She then accused him of causing the disaster, saying that even if he is loyal to her, it doesn't mean he won't make mistakes. Jair attempts to flee, but is intercepted by Shaka and the Hero. Jair transforms into a more demonic form and attempts to kill the party. After being defeated, he reverts to his original form as Valeria approaches him, asking why he did it. After he gleefully confesses to his crimes, saying he did it for Valeria's sake, she angrily takes his own sword and impales him with it, as he dies with a smile of pleasure on his face.

Personality[]

Jair is completely and utterly devoted to serving Valeria, constantly singing her praises. He speaks harshly towards anyone who does not show overt respect for her, and even threatens to kill anyone who would dare speak ill of her. His devotion to her, however, became fanatical zealotry to the point where he would do anything to maintain his ideal fantasy of her as an emotionless, merciless killing machine.

Trivia[]

  • Jair's character is similar to Aamon. Both are subordinates to a seemingly mean character (Valeria & Psaro), both secretly betray them, and both turn into monsters to deal with the Hero that interferes with their plans (Jair's monster forme resembles Demon Marshal Zerudorado, while Aamon's Ashtaroth form resembled Psaro's own monster forme when it took its own path from Estark's body)
