Kathwack is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series.

Attempts to kill all enemies outright with a macabre incantation.

Dragon Quest IV Remakes[]

Absent from the original, it is learned by Psaro at level 42 in the remakes.

Dragon Quest V Remakes[]

While not a spell for players to use, it is once again used by Conkjurers in battle, but they once again fail since they don't have enough MP.

Dragon Quest VI[]

Making its debut, Kathwack is learned by mastering the Sage vocation, and costs 15 MP to cast. It is also used by Dogmus during his boss fight.

Dragon Quest VII[]

Kathwack is learned by Druids at rank 2, Beastly priest at rank 4, and rank 6 of the Bone baron. It once again costs 15 MP to cast, and is also used by Conkjurers and Hirsute Hexers in battle. It is also used by Dark decanters, Yule logs, and Infernal kernels in the 3DS remake.

Dragon Quest VIII[]

Angelo can acquire the spell by investing 56 points into his Staff skill tree and costs 15 MP once again. It is also used by Unholy bishops in battle, and is also used by Trap Box in Memoriam and Marcello in Memoriam in the 3DS remake.

Dragon Quest IX[]

Kathwack is learned by Priests at level 55, and costs 20 MP to cast. As with the other whack spells, its potency is reliant on the priest's Magical Mending, raising the base accuracy from 75% at 200 to 100% at 799. It is also used by Wight emperors in battle against their enemies.

Dragon Quest X[]

Kathwack is used by Pandora's boxes, Hellbound heretics, Dead Man's Souls, Stumped druids, Spirit flames, Umbras, Hypothermions, Infernos, Platinumimics, Wight rulers, Death crows, Pazuzu, Blue Glow, Zexen Devil, Hellbound highness, Demon Zongaron, Mourning Beast Zontedor, Demon alligator, Mageshroom, and Jagonuba's Dark Hands, as well as Wight Emperors once again. It costs 20 MP to cast once again, and has yet to be learned by players.

Dragon Quest XI[]

Kathwack is learned by Serena at level 63 and once again costs 20 MP to cast. It is also used by Kleptoreptiles, Pandora's big bad boxes, Terrornodons, Mimics, Silhouettes, and Golden girls gone Vicious, and a Heedoo voodoo in Baramos' Lair, as well as Pandora's Boxes and Hellbound Heretics once again.

Dragon Quest Heroes & Dragon Quest Heroes II[]

Kathwack appears as Kiryl's Coup de Grâce, carrying over from the Battle Road games. After trying and failing to cast Thwack multiple times, Kiryl becomes annoyed and stomps on the text windows in frustration, before casting a souped-up version of Kathwack, which annihilates groups of enemies with waves of darkness. This version of Kathwack causes damage, rather than instant death, though it does kill enemies if they are low on HP. This is a reference to Kiryl's AI in the NES version of Dragon Quest IV, where Kiryl would infamously cast the Whack and Thwack spells constantly in battle to no effect. In Heroes II, the name is mentioned, but otherwise acts the same.
