King Irwin is a supporting character in Dragon Quest XI. He is the late father of the Prince of Dundrasil, and the last king of Dundrasil.
Biography[]
Fall of Dundrasil[]
Prior to marrying Princess Eleanor and ascending the throne, Irwin was a soldier, having climbed the ranks to the head of the Princess' Guard. They courted for many months, with Irwin asking her father, King Robert to permit their marriage, something he did gladly.
Not long after their wedding, the elderly king abdicated, leaving his new son-in-law Irwin to succeed him, being crowned king of Dundrasil.
He is first seen leading the discussion at the Colloquy of Kings, where King Carnelian, the Sultan of Gallipolis, Lord Robert and King Gustaf of Sniflheim are debating the sudden rise in monster attacks. The conversation shifts to the purpose of the Luminary’s rebirth, for Irwin's son bears the Mark of Light once attributed to the great hero Erdwin.
He argues with Carnelian and Gustaf when they suggest that his son is a harbinger of the Dark One. He refuses to murder his own child for the apparent good of Erdrea, and strongly protests any claims that his son could bring ruin.
However, these accusations were a ruse concocted by the other rulers as a means of testing Irwin’s resolve. They are satisfied and all declare that the Luminary must be protected at all costs.
This contentment would not last, as Mordegon and his army invaded Dundrasil, and stormed the castle. While Carnelian and Rab held off the invasion, Irwin reunited with his wife and Princess Jade, with the intent of escaping through the castle’s underground chambers, holding off a dullahan in the process.
While he successfully guides his wife and child to the escape tunnel, he stays behind to defeat two Moosifers and a Barbatos charging at him (A Chasmonaut, Moosifer, Hyperpyrexion, and a Headless horseman in the 3DS version and 2D Switch mode). Once the monsters are beaten, he hears Carnelian calling for Jade. He goes to alert him, only to discover that Mordegon is in the process of possessing the king.
Through Carnelian, Mordegon stabs Irwin. Hendrik discovers the two, with Carnelian declaring the Luminary to be the Darkspawn, before sending his forces after the fleeing royals in an attempt to secure the child. Irwin attempts to call out to Carnelian, before succumbing to his wounds.
Rise of the Lord of Shadows[]
The party experiences a dream of a tormented knight, having stayed at the Warrior's Rest Inn. Travelling to the ruins of Dundrasil, and uncovering a passage into the tunnels below the wreck castle, they come upon this tormented spirit, known as the Restless Knight, knelt in agony. He engages the party and they beat him, after which they discover it to be the remains of Irwin, the hero's father. Delving into his memories of the fall of Dundrasil, they find his spirit being tormented by the Gloomnivore. The beast is expelled and beaten, and Irwin’s soul and spirit are returned to his armour.
Eleanor is finally able to reach him from the heavens, and the two reunite in the afterlife.
In Search of Lost Time[]
As the Dark One rises again, once more is Irwin tormented by the Gloomnivore. Now imbued with malicious energy of the Dark One, the beast abruptly abandons his meal and charges straight at the party. He is quickly dispatched, allowing Irwin to depart once more to the beyond.
Irwin's spirit can be seen watching over his son alongside his wife Eleanor, should the Hero ask one of his companions to live with him following the completion of one of Drustan's trials.
