Knives (短剣) or Daggers are recurring type of one-handed weapons in the Dragon Quest franchise. Though not as powerful as larger blades, knives are reliable weapons that are most often used by character unable to make use of heavier arms, such as thieves and mages.
Frequently, Knives possess special attributes to compensate for their power, afflicting opponents with paralysis or instant death depending on the weapon equipped. Further more, one knife in particular has gained notoriety for its effectiveness in combating Metal Slimes--the Poison Needle. Because the dirk is set to always deal 1 point of damage upon a successful hit, patient players can whittle down a Metal Slime's HP in a scant few turns.
Being one-handed weapons, Knives makes it possible to equip a Shield in the off hand, or when present, the skill Dual Wielding, makes it possible to equip two knives at the same time, making them even more formidable in combat.

Dragon Quest VIII[]
Jessica and Red can both use knives. Once their knife skill reach 30 and 59 points respectively, they can also start wielding swords as well; due to this, knives can be viewed, expecially in the original release, as a somewhat lackluster weapon type in Dragon Quest VIII, as once it is possible to equip swords, almost every type of knife is vastly outclassed by the swords. That being said, Red makes superior use of the Knives compared to Jessica, with her Blade Cascade skill in particular, being incredibly useful in defeating Metal slime-type enemies if used with the Liquid metal sword equipped.

All knives will deal 10% more damage to monsters in the Insect family. The reason for this odd association is that the kanji for mosquito and knife share the same root-kanji
