Leona is a main character from Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and its animated adaptations. She is the princess of Papnica.

Appearance[]

Leona is an average sized fair-skinned teenage girl depicted with long pink/ginger-blonde girl, while in the 1991 anime adaptation, she was a full yellow blonde. Like Maam, she is described as being beautiful and well-endowed.

She is usually wearing a Papnica royal robe, including when she arrived on Dermline Island.^[1] During the ritual in Dermline's Earth Cave, she wore a special garment. She sold another royal dress worth about 20-30,000 G at Bengarna in exchange for wayfarer's clothes and a wise palm after trying on a dancer's costume.^[1]Eventually she then reverted to a third royal dress, and later when going to the anti-evil cave, she temporarily wore the robe of Carl. She used a new garment during the epilogue.

Personality[]

Leona is by far not always the typical definition of a princess. In fact, she is a bit tomboyish, imposing, sharp-tongued, and extremely blunt, always blurting what she truly thinks and feels like without reservation, even if said comments come at others' expense, as she makes it a personal philosophy to always be honest as it feels better, such as mocking Dai for being small even though he was celebrated by the Romos King as a Hero in the making. Although rather patronizing and somewhat whimsical due to her status, Leona is not a spoiled child and can show wisdom and maturity well beyond her years, from which she commands real respect from her subordinates.

Deep down Leona is a kind person who truly wishes for peace and looks out for others. Despite initially mocking Dai for not being able to use spells, Leona eventually encouraged him on his potential since being able to synergize with as many spells as he did was in fact an impressive feat as her opinion of Dai improved dramatically after he single-handedly stopped the coup attempt against her life. She also initially didn't think too highly of Popp until he proved himself against Baran, proving she prefers to judge people based on their actions.

For a princess of her age she has shown impressive courage, never yielding against her aggressors, no matter the situation. When she was about to be killed by Flazzard, she refused to ever beg for her life and instead roared at the Legion Commander about how humanity would always be able to find the pride to oppose evildoers like him. She is a charismatic leader to whom everyone in Papnica looks up to and can be said to be a highly skilled diplomat, as she had a good relationship with the King of Romos. Both as a ruler and as a person she's also a fair individual, proven when she opted not to punish Hyunckel for effectively commanding the destruction of her kingdom, but rather on his genuine sense of redemption and demanding that he vowed to live by Avan's teachings.

Her soul color is white, representing justice.

Biography[]

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai[]

Leona is the Princess of the Papnica Kingdom. When Papnica was attacked by the Dark Lord, she supported the country with her subordinates in place of the King father who went missing and later stated dead following the Undead Legion assault.

She has a strong spirit of "justice" and organizes a summit to convene kings from all over the world, her leadership and charisma are considerable for young people. She is also known to other countries as a brave princess.

Birth Arc[]

Three months after the incident with the Fake Heroes, Leona who is almost 14 years old comes in a holy ship to Dermline island where she would make a ritual to complete her training as a Sage. With her teacher Varon and the Bishop Temjin they ask Brass for his assistance to go to the volcanic Earth Cave in the island. After knowing Dai a little she gives him her family knife after discovering that he can't use magic. After being betrayed by Temjin and Varon, she is poisoned by an evil scorpion and needs to be saved by Dai. After her teacher is defeated and taken under arrest, she performs her ritual then returns to her kingdom.

Gathering Arc[]

During a part of the story, the main goal of Dai and his party is to reach Papnica where Leona is resisting to the demon army assault.

Clash Arc[]

Leona is hidden with Apollo and Marin at the Baruji Island's tower when she receives the news that Dai is coming. She is attacked by Flazzard that defeat all her soldiers. Dai and his friends appear to save Leona but are defeated by the general. When everyone tries to flee, Leona is frozen by Flazzard and is set to die in three days if not rescued.

After Flazzard is defeated, Leona is rescued from the ice by Maam, whose Magical Gun was destroyed in the process.

Maam leaves the party to train, and Leona joins in her place. Leona keeps teasing Popp about his feelings for Maam, then watching from afar with a sadistic face hoping for him to be reject, Popp takes her to he Magic Forest with Zoom.

Destiny Arc[]

Marin, Apollo and Aimi beg to Leona to go with Dai, but the Princess gets annoyed and leaves. While Papnica's retainers were distracted Leona took advantage and escaped with Dai in the royal balloon (Popp was also secretly riding on it). The three of them go to Bengarna to buy armour at the department store. Leona sells her royal clothing and uses the money to buy Dai an armor. Leona also tries a Dancer's costume (and other clothes in the 1991 version), embarrassing Popp, but in the end she buys Wayfarer's clothes.

The Dark Army's Dragon Legion then attacks the city lead by Killvearn to test Dai's Dragon knight power. Popp and Dai fight the dragons and defeat then, but the people from the city starts to fear Dai super-human strength. That is when Fortune Tellers Nabara and Merle appear, and the old lady reveals that Dai is a dragon knight and he should go to Teran to visit the Dragon Knight Temple.

While Dai is inside the submerged temple, the party waits outside, when Baran comes out from the temple assaulting Dai. Popp uses his spells to attack the Dragon division leader while Leona supports the two boys with healing spells. Dai is defeated by Gigagash and thrown at the lake. Crocodine arrives to help and tries to convince him that he is wrong. Getting tired of trying to take Dai away by force, Baran uses his dragon crest to resonate with his son's to erase the boys memories. Baran, exhausted, then leaves saying that he wil be back to take his son the next day.

Leona, Nabara and Merle keep watch over the amnesic boy, but Popp refuses to see his friend as a weakling and tries to make him recover his memories by force, but it fails. Leona takes Dai to be protected in the basement of Teran castle. Popp pretends to run away, being questioned by Crocodine and Leona, but without then knowing goes alone to fight Baran and his three Dragon riders.

When Baran arrives, Leona and Crocodine go to face him, and Baran reveals that Popp was actually facing Galdandy, and is probably dead. Crocodine keeps being injured while Leona keeps healing him. Crocodine's Vortex Axe is destroyed and general is almost killed, but Popp and Hyunckel arrive at the last moment to save him.

Baran then transforms in the Demon-Dragon-Man and beats the entire party. When Baran is about to the destroy the whole kingdom with Doru Aura when Dai comes out and the casting of the spell is stopped.

Popp tries to defeat Baran by mimicking Avan by casting Megante and sacrificing himself, but the spell fails. However it made Dai recovers his memories. Dai, that now could use the Dragonic Aura, destroyed the Papnica Sun Knife in the battle as result of his own overwhelming new powers.

Leona, injured to the point of not being able to walk, crawls to Popp and tries to bring him back with Zing, but the spell fails. While Dai was battling Merle used Heal on Hyunckel and Crocodine.

After Baran is defeated, he goes and give his blood to Popp, saying that he could revive if he had enough will, what actually happened.

During the night the party was making Dai company while he recovered. After that Zaboera and Hadlar used a sleeping spell to make everyone sleep beside Popp and Gome. Matoriv appears to battle and Dai then wakes up and easily defeat the two demons.

Holy Sword Arc[]

The party returns to Papnica after the battle. Leona gives Dai new clothes and the last Papnica dagger. When Popp and Dai go to Romos looking for the Sword of Champions, Leona remains at Papnica getting ready for the reunion of the world lasting governors.
