Lightning is a recurring ability in the Dragon Quest series. Unless otherwise stated, it pulls down bolts from the sky for 50~70 damage and 0 MP, and is typically learned by bruiser types rather than casters.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IV Remakes

Lightning is used by the Demon thunderer in the remakes of IV, dealing 35~45 to all enemies.

Dragon Quest V

Making its debut, Lightning is learned by several monster companions:

Name Level
Bomboulder 20
Rebjørn 40
Saber 40
Golem 45
Old man of the sea 45

It is also used by Old men of the sea, Wyrtoises, and Bjorn in battle.

Dragon Quest VI

Lightning is learned by advancing to rank 3 of the Luminary vocation. Despite all appearances, the skill belongs to the bang family of spells, much like the Lightning Slash. It is also used by Crayzees, Hellstalkers, the Third Trial, Gallows giant, and Murdaw.

Dragon Quest VII

Acting the same as in VI, it is learned as an Hybrid ability of the Mage and Sailor vocations, as well as mastering the Serial quiller vocation. It is also used by Demon thunderers, Natural born quillers, Monarchaeopteryxes, Beastly priests, and Orgodemir, as well as Hellstalker once again. Lighting was nerfed in the 3DS version, with a new range of 30~50, and is learned by mastering the Sailor vocation.

Dragon Quest VIII

An enemy only skill, Lightning deals 28~36 damage and is used by Phantom swordsmen, as well as Demon thunderers and Hellstalkers once again.

Dragon Quest IX

Lightning grew weaker in IX, dealing only 17~26 damage, and is used by Cumulus rexes, and the Master of Nu'un, in addition to Wyrtoises once again. In addition, 2 new skills surpassing Lightning make their debut in this game.

Dragon Quest X

While an enemy skill used by Thunder frogs, Captain dragos, Tormentaurs, Crimson glaives, and Invisible swordsmen, it can be learned through the Druid vocation, and by Great sabrecats when players recruit one to their side.

Dragon Quest XI

Once again an enemy only skill, it is used by 24-carrot bunicorns, Old men of the sea once again, Hellbound hair-raisers, and Electric needlers.
