Lorelei's harp is an important item in several Dragon Quest titles. Where available, it calls upon the powers of mermaids to transport a ship underwater.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest VI[]
The harp is given by Ova and Unda upon completion of the Pescado scenario. Only usable in the Real World, it allows the ship Providence to submerge in open water, allowing the party when submerged, to freely explore the seafloor. Though the harp encloses the Providence in a giant bubble for the sake of the party, the ship is not made immune to random encounters while undersea.
Dragon Quest XI[]
The harp returns, this time given by the mermaid Michelle after completing her quest in Lonalulu. Unlike the previous title, in which was possible to explore all of the ocean floor, the harp can this time only transport Sylvando's ship, the Salty Stallion, from within columns of light scattlered across the seas of Erdrea. One such pillar leads directly to the mermaid kingdom of Nautica, while the other pillars of light form several pairs, creating shortcuts to reach with the Salty Stallion bodies of water otherwise blocked off, such as Insula Centralis.
World of Light[]
Michelle had been charged with keeping it, but fell in love with a man named Kainoa whom she saved in a storm. Two generations passed, and Kainoa died in exile for his dealings with mermaids. Michelle, who was waiting for him to return, kept staying on the Strand during these years. When the Luminary is sent to search for him, he instead finds Kainoa's grandson Kainui.
Should the Luminary had chosen to tell her the truth, Michelle, initially in denial, nonetheless agrees to wait on the edge of Sainiki Beach for her beau. The Luminary escorts Kainui to the beach, where Michelle notes the family resemblance, but is shocked and heartbroken to confirm that her Kai has long since passed. Unable to bear the pain, she then sacrifices herself on land to join her lost love, willing her treasure to the Luminary and his party, which they can find in a chest back at the Strand.
Alternatively should the Luminary had chosen to lie to her and tell her to instead keep waiting, Michelle gladly comply in blissful unawareness of her lover's passing, and for their services, she still happily rewards the party with the precious harp.
Considering that once the Luminary travels back in time to prevent the fall of Yggdrasil, Calasmos's return and subsequent world turmoil causes Michelle and Kainui to be able to meet one another under less tragic circumstances and start a budding romance, it would seem to imply that this second choice is considered by the story the canonical one.
World of Darkness[]
During Mordegon's reign of terror on Erdrea, Lorelei's harp is lost immediatly after the Fall of Yggdrasil, but was recovered by Jade before heading to Octagonia, where she was forced to submit to Booga until the rest of her allies defeats him. Because Nautica is under siege as well, the mermaids cannot control the vortices of light with which to carry the Salty Stallion underwater. Once Alizarin is sunk, the seals are broken.
