Magic Burst is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series.

Description[]

It uses all the user's remaining MP to launch an attack on all opponents, its power dependent on the amount of MP spent.

Appearances[]

Main games[]

Dragon Quest IV Remakes[]

Absent from the original, it is the last spell Psaro acquires in the remakes, and is also used by the true final boss in Chapter 6.

Dragon Quest VI[]

The game of the spell's introduction, it is acquired by Ashlynn through an event in her hometown of Sorceria and can also be learned by assuming the liquid metal slime class. The spell is also used by Mortamor and Nokturnus during their boss fights.

Dragon Quest VII[]

Acquired through the Gripevine class, it is one of the most powerful spells in the game, dealing about 3 damage per MP used (and thus capable of nearly 3000 damage if the user has the maximum of 999 MP). It is also used by Orgodemir during the 4th phase of the true final battle against him. In the 3DS remake, his animation for casting it involves his brain showing its one eye.

Dragon Quest VIII[]

Learned by Jessica upon mastery of her fisticuffs skill set, its power has been decreased from the earlier games, likely due to the ability to Psyche Up to raise an attack's potency. It is also used by Rhapthorne and the Ultimate dragon. In addition, a more powerful version of this spell, Multi Masher, makes its debut in this game.

Dragon Quest IX[]

Sages who reach level 78 in the vocation will acquire the spell. As is the case with the previous installment, its damage has been reduced due to psyching up, and will only deal about 1.5 times the current MP of the user of damage if cast without tension. Corvus's final form, Gem slimes, and Greygnarl at his full strength can cast the spell. The Legacy Bosses Mortamor, Rhapthorne and Nokturnus all learn the ability at level 57.

Dragon Quest X[]

Learned through the Armamentalist vocation after completing the final trial from the master and investing 150 skill points into the Fource skill tree, it is now classified as a spell, and can be reflected with Bounce, while also being powered up by Channel Anger. It acts the same as in previous appearances and is used by Mortcurys, Darkonium slimes, Demon overlord, Blackmar, Kukulkannibal, Big sham hatwitch, Small sham hatwitches, Maldragora, Akragarena, the Demon Dragon, Darkwater devil, and Primitive Beast Fodras, as well as Gem Slimes, Ashtaroth, and Corvus once again. It is also learned by recruited Imps from the latter half of 3.2 onwards by 40 skill points into the Adult skill tree after its 8th reincarnation, though it would be changed to Baby Magic Burst due to players abusing this spell in Battle Road. In the Offline version of the game, it is a Coup de Grâce learned at level 75 by the Hero in the Armamentalist vocation, and is also one of Fura's Coups de Grâce, learned by investing 20 skill points into her Wind Rider skill tree after clearing the Skill Panel Expansion Quest, costing 25% Tension to use in addition to all MP.

Dragon Quest XI[]

Acting the same as in X, it is learned by Veronica at level 70, as well as Serena after her haircut. It is also used by Mortamammoth and Hoopthorne in battle. In addition, a Pep Power version of this spell (Mighty Magic Burst) makes its debut in this game, while another Pep Power version (Malicious Magic Burst) makes its debut in the Definitive Edition.

Monsters series[]

Dragon Quest Monsters[]

The spell's nature has changed little from its introduction, applying to some resistances existing in the monster population. Powerful monsters, such as the Prism peacock, acquire the spell, though, humorously enough, the basic Slime is capable of learning it if their stats and lineage will allow.

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2[]

The spell remains mostly the same from the original Monsters title, only with a few of the new monsters learning it as well. The simple slime is still capable of learning the spell if it obtains the statistics for it.

Magic Burst is randomly available as a part of the Hero's Command Selection ability. The spell creates a swelling explosion similar to the Smart Bomb item but will increase in size surprisingly quickly until it covers approximately half of the Final Destination stage. Damage will range from 10.1% to 48.8% depending on the {5MP}} available, and at full power the spell can kill a foe on as little as 20%.

Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Heroes II[]

Appearing as Jessica's Coup de Grâce, it damages all enemies in range after pulling them towards Jessica like a vortex.
