Maximum, also known as King Maximum, is an antagonist of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga and anime series. Created by Vearn himself, he is an animated chess piece made of Orichalcum, just like the Hadlar Royal Guards, as they originally all belonged to the same chess set. Maximum was given command over the remaing ten pieces, who followed his orders like will-less puppets, and appointed as guard of Vearn's personal palace.
Appearance[]
Maximum is a tall, bulky humanoid made of Orichalcum. As the King of the chess set piece, Maximum dons a crown and regalia made of Orichalcum. He has noticeable spikes on his shoulders, and smaller spikes on his gauntlets. His face also has more human features like a beard and mustache. His footgear is two layered, with a bulky squared base, and an ovalized section on top, almost giving the impression of sandals.
Personality[]
Maximum is by far and lot the nastiest of the Orichalcum chess pieces. Being created by Vearn himself, Maximum lacks decency and honor and is concerned purely with victory. Extremely arrogant, he often proclaims himself as the "strongest guardian of Vearn Palace" or "Vearn's mightiest warrior" or "the most trusted by Vearn" amongst many other such titles, deeply inflating his actual value. It is because of this self-engrandoisement, that he resents Mystvearn who looks down on Maximum as a mere janitor.
Nonetheless for all his perceived worth, Mystvearn's appreciation of him is not inaccurate, for Maximum is a coward who uses underhanded tactics to win and only dirties his hands whenever he believes he can actually win. A weak fighter by nature, he has his pieces do the fight for him and grows more desperate the more he sees his advantage disappear. He is such a coward, that his prefered method of fighting is to attack whoever he believes is the weakest, and takes pride on his predatory methods. Above all he fancies himself an intelligent tactician, but is easily outsmarted by more seasoned warriors than himself.
Abilities[]
As an entity made of Orichalcum, Maximum is nigh immune to most forms of damage, leaving very few methods available to hurt him. Being the King of the Orichalcum pieces, Maximum is contrary to his title, an extremely weak fighter with no prowess whatsoever. His central ability lies in his power to direct his lesser pieces in fight just like a King would. His secondary power allows him to scan his adversaries and analyze them in a rather robotic way. Scanning foes this way he can quantify their current status in rather RPG-esque ways, such as being able to discern their "HP" and "MP" values.
He can also use an improved version of this scan, to inspect his foes down to minimal detail such as their memories and techniques which he could use to learn of potential weaknesses. This power, however, is cut short by Maximum's fundamentally null fighting ability, and his own over-estimation of his actual strength and commanding.
Furthermore, due to being a King, Maximum is severely hindered in action. Just like the King can only move one tile at a time, Maximum can only do one thing at a time. He cannot, for example, command his troops and plan a strategy at the same time. Unless he commands his pieces, they will not move as they depend entirely on his orders. He was instantly exterminated by Larhalt without Maximum ever realizing the damage the Land Rider did to him while everyone around him noticed, further proving his weakness.
