Biography[]

One of Zenias's villages, shrouded in fog. One of its local legends tells a story about a time where Menet Village was besieged by a never ending rain, until one day a golden chicken appeared from the skies; his cries cleared up the clouds, and where he landed a tiny sprout appeared, which quickly grew in a large, curving tree similarly to a mistletoe, and ever since then, the villagers have revered both the chicken and the mistletoe, dedicating a festival to them.

However, its inhabitants, and even the farm animals, have recently mysteriously fallen to sleep due to the appearance of some eerie owl-like monsters, save for Tops, who is trying to wake up a girl named Tise, his best friend.

Upon arriving, the Hero, Porte, Hussar and Azbar, decided to investigate the village to discover the cause of this mysterious sleep. However, the appearances of Azbar and Hussar, unusual for the people of Zenias, spooked Tops, who fled accidentally dropping his owl-shaped charm, a censer which become unlit upon falling down. Just then, the group spotted a strange owl monster, and the group began falling asleep, being able to escape only thanks to Azbar's timely summoning of Rigibalus to take them away. Re-grouping outside the village, the Ember Explorers figured out that the charm would prevent them to fall asleep, so they re-lit the censer; they re-entered and, after Azbar powered up the censer in order to spread out its fragrance in a range wide enough to fight, Hussar and the Hero attacked the Sleepowl. After the battle, Tops, having seen the fight from afar, approached the group, amazed how easily the two warrior were able to defeat the monsters. Unfortunately, another Sleepowl was soon spotted in the sky, with Tops reporting to having seen a whole flock of them.

Deciding to trust the group, Tops explained how the censer, the Dream Censer, protected him from falling asleep, and even allowed him to sleeptalk with the dreaming villagers, with the exception of Tise, who has remained silent ever since her sleep had gotten even deeper, Furthermore, recently also all the other villagers had grown silent, likely indicating that the time to wake them up was running short.

On an hunch, Porte suggested that Tops hand the Dream Censer to the Hero, and as predicted, the Dream Censer strongly reacted to their strong inner Power of Creation, allowing Tise to speak in her sleep after so long. Repeating what she had heard Elder Rona say, Tise suggested that the sleep would end once the owls would disappear, prompting the group to seek guidence by sleeptalking with the Elder directly for further information. Menawhile, in order to locate the nest of the Sleepowls, Azbar transformed into a Dracky and began following one of them.

After jogging Elder Rona's memory with some peppers, he told the group the legend of Dusk and Dawn, of a time long ago where a divine being shrouded the sky in a perpetual darkness, with only the stars and the moon shining. The divine being also called an owl, in order to put the people to sleep and shield them from the fear of something, with the owl, from the nearby temple, then capturing their nightmares in order to make them sleep soundly; only when the owl would fall, the sun would shine again, and the endless sleep would cease. Upon Azbar's return, he confirmed that the owl's nest was in a nearby shrine, the Evening Temple; with Tops opting to remain behind, the Ember Explorers began making way to the temple.

After answering the question of the sentient entrance gate, and solving the puzzles inside, the group finally reached the owl of legend, the Demowl. After defeating him, the sun began to shine, but as a last resort, the Demowl used the special power entrusted to him by his protector and reversed the Dream Censer, transforming it in the Censer of Lost Dreams; only the timely help of Hussar, who was knocked out earlier, prevented the rest of the group to fall into an eternal sleep. They tried to examine the mysterious coffin in the room, but they couldn't open it; furthermore, considering that the Demowl knew much more about the Dream Censer and its powers, Azbar began pondering how Tops came to its possession in the first place.

Still, the sun shone on Menet once more, and Tise and the rest of the villagers woke up; however, Tops mysteriously disappeared just as he was about to give a bouquet to the waking Tise. But even with this tragic twist, Elder Rona lended the book of the legend of Dusk and Dawn to Azbar, and rewarded the Ember Explorers; thusly the Star Seal Crystal was filled with some Benevolessence.

Trivia[]

  • Menet Village's situation is also very similar to what happened to Norvik in Dragon Quest III, when the Queen of Faeries put the village into a neverending sleep on the spot, though while it was due to her daughter Aniseed and a human man having seemingly eloped together, which she scowled about, with the Queen only realizing she made a bad choice when she learned that the two lovers had killed themselves due to her prohibition for them to see each other, and as such gave the Hero and their party Wakey dust to wakes up its citizens as an apology, the Demowl's sleeping plans on the village were seemingly more sinister in nature.
