Mirage is a boss monster in Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Mirage looks almost exactly the same of a Smog monster, except his eyes were a cobalt blue color with a notable darkened fog body and a frown, much like the Blue moon family.
Personality[]
He shown to be quite cautions once he heard the prophecy Rubiss told to Princess Gwaelin and advised his liege to imprison the latter to learn its context. His entry information suggest he is working under another High Priest who also supported Dragonlord on his quest of conquering Alefgard, implied this caution was pure loyalty to said priest; as in the Japanese version when he stayed and heard the prophecy context. Mirage is implied to have told him instead of Dragonlord about it, and carries the order to kill the Hero that heard the prophecy mentioned.
Mirage is quite sadistic as he takes delight when tormenting Gwaelin with the illusion of her own parents getting burned by fire, even bringing multiple copies of said illusion just to break her spirits. If she is present with the Hero in Weirdwood, she will ask if he is the monster that has shown her the illusion, he sneer and confirmed it, and even believe if the Hero is killed in front of her by he and his kind, her spirits will truly break, displaying a pride and commitment of his work. This ended up costing his life, cursing the victorious hero before fading into nothing.

Biography[]
The Mirage first appears after the Dragonlord had successfully taken the Sphere of Light from Princess Gwaelin, convincing the Ruler of Darkness to kidnap her in order to find out what Rubiss had told her. Despite his initial misgivings about the Mirage and his kind, the Dragonlord okays it since he already stole the Sphere of Light and commands his minions, consisting of 2 groups of Chimaeras, Raving lunaticks, and Skeleton scrappers, to return with him to his castle, while the Mirage takes Gwaelin to Quagmire Cave under the protection of a Green dragon. While in the Quagmire Cave, the Mirage torments Gwaelin with illusions of her father and his royal chancellor in the hopes she would confess the message from Rubiss, though she doesn't give in. Later after the Hero had defeated the Green Dragon and rescued Gwaelin from captivity, the Mirage figures out the message Rubiss told Gwaelin was that a hero would come forth to save Alefgard and commends him for defeating the Green Dragon that guarded Gwaelin. The Dragonlord tells the Mirage that the Hero must be dealt with, which the monster agrees and disappears to follow the orders. After the Hero ventures through Weirdwood, the Mirage tries to deceive the Hero with illusions of Gwaelin's Guard and Captain, who decided to leave their job of guarding Tantegel and aid the Hero on their quest to slay the Dragonlord, though Gwaelin, either through the Princess Pledge or in person, tells her beloved Hero that they're not real since they would never abandon their post and calls upon Rubiss to dispel the illusions, which she does, enraging the Mirage that he and his kind failed to deceive Gwaelin again, who rebukes that no soldier of Tantegel would abandon their post to aid the Hero and tells him about the Mirage's cruel torture of illusions in Quagmire Cave. The Mirage tells the Hero they meet again and that he is a threat to the Dragonlord's plans, vowing to kill him and summons 2 other Mirages, beginning a fight, which they lose. The Mirage curses his loss, but warns the Hero about the power of darkness surrounding Cantlin's Golem before dying and freeing the Dream-Whisperer.
