Biography

Dragon Quest XI

Little is known or explained of the entity called the Lord of Shadows. The first hints of this being surface as a magic-robbing monster named Jarvis is seen accosting two of his lackeys over the disappearance of the young mage Veronica; he wanted to be in good standing with his master by capturing and killing her. When he is defeated, Jarvis tells them they'll find out soon and disappears, leaving the party bewildered as to who it may be.

Other monsters in his service present that the dark mage Mordegon is the Lord of Shadows; Mordegon himself makes this connection on several occasions, but a sinister being revealing himself after the Fall of Yggdrasil serves to disprove it.

The Lord of Shadows is met for the first and only time in the Fortress of Fear, where he is a deformed giant who calls himself Mordegon. He then fuses with the mage in defeat, creating a vicious twin dragon.

The true identity of the Lord of Shadows is explained in some detail when the Luminary witnesses a vision of the distant past. Here, it can be inferred that the Lord of Shadows is a being that came into existence when Calasmos' seal was rendered incomplete; while a portion entered Morcant and granted him immeasurable power, Morcant as Mordegon was still in the service of another being. It can be assumed, thus, that the Lord of Shadows was the controlling force.
