Mystvearn, or just Myst, is one of the main antagonists of the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai manga and anime series. He is the commander of the Shadow Legion in Vearn's Dark Army, holding the title of Shadow Vizier and a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.
Biography[]
The Hero Avan and The Hellfire Dark Lord[]
More than 15 years ago, Mystvern, already a servant of Vearn, was tasked to discreetly assisting one of at the time top generals of Hadlar's Dark Army, the Death Troll Gangadia, in his endeavours to find a way to dispel the spell that had time-frozen the Dark Lord. Having come to a dead end in his research, Gangandia's hand was suddently moved by the unseen Mystvearn through Dark Puppetry Aura Hand, drawing the magic circle necessary to complete the counter-ritual. It proved successful, and Hadlar, as well as Avan, were returned to life; when asked to, Gangadia admitted that he was not the one who had saved Hadlar, recounting how his hand moved like out of divine will. Hearing this hadlar strongly suspected Vearn's intervention, but the latter chose not to yet reveal his presence.
Appearance[]
Myst-Vearn is a spectral being donning the Shadow Raiment: a hooded white cape that covers almost the entirety of his body, touching the ground. Both the end of his sleeves and lower ends features a black colored pattern resembling the upper-case Iota or roman numerical I. The cape includes a stiff red pelerine over the shoulders and white collar stand behind the hood.
The robe is tied by golden hexagonal clasps on his pelerine connected by a necklace with red jewels. The central bead has three jewels and breaks open when removing the Shadow Raiement. The clasps also have long yellow stripes of clothing covered with hexagonal pattern reaching below where his knees would be.
Myst-Vearn uses armored gloves and boots with a metallic mask fastened on his hood. The interior of his body is entirely black and completely indistinguishable, except for a glowing sphere on his "torso" and two glowing spheres serving as his "eyes".
While taking his Shadow Raiment, Mystvearn's appearance is that of a young humanoid demon with long silver hair and closed eyes, with dark markings resembling his spectral form in his forehead.
Myst's true form is that of a dark spectral being with yellow markings on his "torso" and yellow eyes with red pupils.
Personality[]
Mystvearn is the very definition of a shadow, completely silent, even if present. He is so quiet and reserved that it is infamously said he only speaks once each several years, an infamy backed up by being such a highly spectral entity. He will only speak the bare minimum and only if he deems it absolutely necessary to do so, otherwise he tends to act through gestures. Despite his closed nature, he does seem to get reasonably along with his fellow Legion Commanders, maintaining a sense of mutual respect.
Mystvearn is fiercely loyal to his lord Vearn and executes his every command with chilling precision and no questioning. Mystvearn is scheming and crafty, acting rapidly and efficiently, involving himself only to whatever extent is truly necessary, neither overdoing it nor retreating too early. Although he shows little in the way of emotion, Mystvearn is manipulative and cruel, exploiting Flazzard's thirst for victory as a means to coerce him into donning the Shadow Legion's Ultimate Armor with the sole purpose of testing Dai's strength, but then killing him after he had outlived his usefulness without feeling nothing at all. As a result of his nature, Hyunckel held a deep respect towards Mystvearn and believed him to be the most dangerous of the Legion Commanders.
Beneath his calculating exterior, Mystvearn is capable of showing dignity and a sense of chivalry, being generally a fair combatant even if a ruthless one. Myst-Vearn developed a deep sense of respect for Hadlar and his commitment to becoming stronger even if it meant sacrificing his own immortality to achieve victory, something that propelled the otherwise detached Mystvearn into acting for Hadlar's behalf.
He was visibly dismayed when learning that Hadlar had a Black Core within him which all but ensured that Hadlar would unlikely have his much-desired win. When Hadlar questioned whether he was purely a pawn, Mystvearn remained in silence before replying that his loyalty to Vearn took priority, evidencing his personal conflict over the entire ordeal.
In the same way, Mystvearn was profoundly disgusted by Zaboera's treacherous nature and scolded him harshly for badmouthing Hadlar. Although the two have shown to work well together, Mystvearn does neither trust Zaboera nor care about him in the slightest more than willing to let him fend off for himself or even downright threaten to kill him if he did anything to endanger Vearn.
Myst's respect for the strong comes as a result of his own nature. Because he is a Dark Aura lifeform with no physical form of his own, he cannot grow stronger through his own efforts so he naturally envies and respects those that can grow stronger by themselves. Choosing the strongest bodies to possess has thus been his modus operandi for potentially hundreds of years as it was the only thing he could do. His deep loyalty towards Vearn comes as a result of the latter acknowledging him making him feel needed.
Naturally, other than Vearn's body, Myst cares little to nothing about what he does to other bodies as there are only a means to an end. Hyunckel in particular is his chosen final body, training him in the arts of Dark Aura with the sole purpose to serve as a perfect vessel to him.
Abilities[]
Myst-Vearn is amongst the most powerful of Vearn's servants. As a spectral being, Mystvearn fights using darkness, being a master of Dark Aura which allows him to employ diverse deadly techniques beyond common sorcery. He is able to vanish his presence to almost undetectable degrees, rendering himself invisible as well. He is also capable of teleporting in both long and short distances, which he puts to use in combat by appearing almost suddenly to any surrounding spectator.
Mystvearn's most infamous technique is Dark Puppetry Aura Hand in which he ejects Dark Aura from his fingers in the form of strings that attach themselves into the opponent, robbing them of the ability to move. This technique was originally devised to control phantoms but can be used to control the living being's skeleton structure as well, which puts his opponents effectively at his mercy as he can manipulate them as he wishes.
A much-advanced form of this technique is Dark Puppetry Aura Decimation Field, which instead creates a spider web of Dark Aura in the ground around Myst-Vean effectively trapping any opponent surrounding him for virtually the same effect. His strongest attack is Dark Aura Ultimate Hand, in which he concentrates his Dark Aura in a single hand with power destructive enough to pulverize Orichalcum. His mastery of Dark Aura is such that he mentored Hyunckel himself on its use, allowing him to use Aura Hand and empower his signature Bloody Scryde.
Despite his supposed spectral essence, Mystvearn has shown impressive physical ability, catapulting Dai to the ground with a single punch, which surprised the latter. Another extension is seen through his Byut Deathstringer, in which he extends his fingers like spears at dangerously fast discharges, with a puncturing ability capable of piercing through Hyunckel's armor. He can regenerate his fingers and even form swords with his hands.
In truth, Myst is a parasitic entity of Dark Aura with the ability to possess bodies and use them as his own. For a majority of the story, Myst utilizes Vearn's body which was split between his older self which held his wisdom and magic, and his younger self which held his physical abilities with Myst having control of the latter. Under normal circumstances, Myst only covers the surface of the body, while keeping his body sealed and hidden from view under his spectral appearance. When removing his Shadow Raiment, Vearn's body is fully visible, and it is at this point that Myst now truly possesses Vearn's body signalled by a small black-face like markings on his forehead which are part of Myst's true form. When possessing Vearn's body, Myst can now employ Vearn's extremelly powerful physical abilities to the extent he was able to single-handedly defeat Dai's party (with Dai absent) including powerful fighters such as Larhart and Hym with ease, even being able to break Orichalcum through sheer brute force alone. In this form he is unable to use his Bute Death Stringer but can in exchange use one of Vearn's techniques such as Phoenix Wing which is a fast palm strike that can reflect spells.
Furthermore, because Vearn's youthful body is placed under The Secret Spell of Frozen Time, his body has its time sealed, meaning it doesn't age nor cannot be injured as wounds disappear. While normally one would not be able to move under such a spell, Myst's parastic ability allows him to control Vearn's body while under the spell, essentially bypassing a handicap while drawing all the benefits thus making Myst by all accounts an invincible warrior who cannot take damage and has the might of the Dark King himself. In theory that a Medroa spell would still defeat him as it obliterates matter as would expelling Myst from Vearn's body, however, both are untested.
In his true form, he lacks a body so he cannot be physically hurt. His greatest weakness is Light Aura, which can damage and even expel him from bodies he possesses. Myst can counter this through the use of Dark Aura to repel the Light Aura, so any attempt to defeat him are thus a contest of strength between his and his opponent's Aura strength.
