Etymology

The name "Nelgel" is a possible bastardization of Nergal, the name of a deity often portrayed as demon working closely with Satan. This is rather fitting, given how Nelgel's actions were completely by order of his leader, Madesagora. The name "Meiou" comes from the old Habsburg motto, meaning destiny to rule the world. This is also fitting, given how Nelgel is ruling Astolia on Madesagoura's behalf.

Trivia

  • Although numerous romanizations of ネルゲル can be found across the Internet, the romanization "Nelgel" appears to be the most agreed upon among fans. It was confirmed as the official name in Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition.
  • Dragon Quest Illustrations: 30th Anniversary Edition instead uses "Meiou Nerugeru" and "Meijuuou Nerugeru".
  • Nelgel is the only Dragon Quest villain to succeed in killing the Hero. The only other to succeed in this endeavor is Patriarch Orstov.
    • In addition, he is the first Dragon Quest villain since Mortamor to appear on the box art for his respective game.
  • Nelgel's appearance and overall demeanor is reminiscent to that of Orgodemir, and bears a strong resemblance to Whis from Dragon Ball Z.
    • His antagonistic nature and the fact that he has a scythe also means he that bears a strong resemblance to Magus from Chrono Trigger.
