Nintendo (officially Nintendo Co. Ltd.) is a provider of video game hardware and software since the early 1980s, when it originally was a maker of toys and games for the Japanese market. As one of the world's three largest producers of home video game hardware with Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo maintains a key role in the gaming industry. Nintendo was instrumental in helping the industry recover from the worldwide crash of 1983 through its implementation of licensing and quality control, which in turn helped small developers like Enix (now Square Enix) create recognition for themselves. Nintendo developed the majority of the platforms used by the Dragon Quest series, including the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Nintendo DS. As publisher, the company is credited with work on the North American releases of the first six series titles as well as Dragon Quest IX and multiple spin-off games.
