Nintendo (officially Nintendo Co. Ltd.) is a provider of video game hardware and software that originated as a card maker. It is currently one of the three largest producers of home video game hardware, alongside Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo was instrumental in helping the video game industry recover from the video game crash of 1983 through its implementation of licensing and quality control. This allowed third party developers and publishers like Enix (now Square Enix) to create recognition for themselves. Nintendo developed the majority of the platforms used by the Dragon Quest series, including the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Nintendo DS. The company has also been the non-Japanese publisher of one version of nine of the 31 Dragon Quest games made for their platforms.
