The Nintendo 3DS (sometimes just 3DS) is a handheld video game console developed and released in 2011 by Nintendo. It is the successor to the Nintendo DS. It is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or other accessories. The console, like its predecessor, features a clamshell design with two LCD screens, one of which is touch-sensitive. It is backwards-compatible with Nintendo DS games.
The Nintendo 3DS features tag modes called Spotpass and Streetpass, which were apparently inspired by Dragon Quest IX's Tag Mode. It is part of the eight generation of video game consoles. The Nintendo 3DS XL was a larger version of the 3DS, released in 2012. The Nintendo 2DS, released in 2013, was a cheaper system that could not display stereoscopic 3D and has a slate-like design rather than the clamshell one. The New Nintendo 3DS was an improved 3DS, and were released in 2014.
