"Only Lonely Boy"' (Love Song 探して Love Song Sagashite, "Looking for a Love Song"), also named "Joyous Song" and "Love Song" outside of Japan, is a musical theme from Dragon Quest II. The melody is one of the most recognizable pieces of music of the Dragon Quest series and it's one of the two signature songs of Dragon Quest II, the other being "My Road My Journey".

Like with almost all Dragon Quest music, Koichi Sugiyama is the composer of the song. The melody has been arranged multiple times, mostly by Sugiyama himself.

The first official release of the song besides the original video game is the one contained in the 1987 album Suite Dragon Quest II, which contains and arranged version as well as the original Famicom version (as part of a single track with the full Famicom soundtrack).

The song has been re-arranged, covered and collected multiple times. It's one of the most iconic melodies from the entire Dragon Quest series.

Vocal versions[]

Anna Makino version[]

The first and best-known vocal version was performed by J-pop singer Anna Makino, with lyrics by Yoshiko Miura and arrangement by Masaaki Omura. It was Makino's debut single, released five days before the launch of Dragon Quest II as a promotional tie-in.

Haruko Momoi version[]

Singer and voice actress Haruko Momoi covered Makino's version with a new arrangement by Yuki Tsuruta. Momoi's version was released in 2004 as part of the Nurse Witch Komugi image album Endless Summer ~ Vacation!, in which Momoi performs in-character as Komugi series lead Komugi Nakahara.

Original Japanese lyrics Japanese transliteration English translation

Love Song

only lonely boy, only lonely boy
only lonely boy, only lonely boy

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love

Paradise

only lonely boy, only lonely boy
only lonely boy, only lonely boy

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love

Love song sagashite urotsuteiru kimi ga ima
Mafuyu no kosaten hitori yokogitta yo
Sayonara shita koi o Tada jitto dakishimeteru
Tsukiakari sasu kimi no kage o watashi shinjirareru

Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Seishun no meiro de mayotteiru no wa
Sosa kimi dake janai
Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Tatakaitsuzuke sasuraitsuzuke
Itsuka kitto koko made kite

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love

Paradise oshieteagetaikedo mada hayai
Jibun no te de sagashiatete hoshii nosa
Doka shiteru sonna kimi o watashi shinjirareru

Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Namida no uragawa ga heart no Goal sa
Ima wa yuki o dashite
Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Tatakaitsuzuke sasuraitsuzuke
Itsuka kitto koko made kite

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love

You're wandering around in search of a love song
I'm at the crossroads of midwinter, all by myself
I'm just holding on to the love to which I said farewell
I can still confide in your shadow in the moonlight

Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
You're lost in the labyrinth of youth
And you're not the only one
Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Keep on fighting, keep on wandering
Sooner or later you'll come this far

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love

I'd love to tell you about paradise, but I'm not ready
I want you to find out on your own
When the wind blows, it's a blue sigh
Something's not right, I can trust you

Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
The goal of my heart is behind tears
Now just try to be brave
Only lonely boy, only lonely boy
Keep on fighting, keep on wandering
Sooner or later you'll come this far

I need your love
I need your love
I need your love, true love
