The Original Owners, are a set of five characters in Dragon Quest X.

All belonging to a different race, they also all died a short time before the soul of the Hero, a Human, was resurrected into the body one of the other five races, making them ideal hosts. Furthermore, by pure coincidence, all Original Owners just happened to share the same name as the Hero.

A similar situation also happened to Singh, who resurrected into the body of the recently deceased Crow.

Description[]

The name "Original Owner" stems from the fact that the Hero's soul, by the will of the gods, returns to life by inhabitating one the Original Owners's corpses for the sake of convenience. Each of Original Owners belonged to a different race, and had their own different backstories before each of them met their untimely demises.

Since, once one of the base five races has been chosen, it cannot be changed to another one except for the option to revert to the original Human visage, it is required to create a completely new character from scratch in order to experience the different initial stories of each Original Owner.

However, while each of the stories of the Original Owners does offer some interesting details and perspectives about the world of Astoltia, ultimately each one of them is comparable with one another, with their most important events being essentially the same for all of them; for example, the Hero always briefly assumes the identity of the Original Owner, before eventually revealing themselves as a different individual to the local authorithy thanks to the use of Ra's mirror, after having been saved from some evil adversary by a mysterious light appearing in the sky, and thusly being sent on a journey to claim some Emblems of recognition across Astoltia, in order to find a way to reclaim their former appearance, and defeat the culprint behind the destruction of Tenton, Nelgel the Netherlord.

In the case of the most important original events, such as earlier appearances of key characters or monsters, nothing truly, truly important is ever lost, as they would nevertheless return later, or receive a callback in the story in some fashion, or being resolved in some optional sidequest. Furthermore, each Original Owner had also some kind of tie with another, more important character; all of these other important people would later end up interacting with the Hero during the main story in some decree, regardless of which original owner had been initially chosen.

As such, there is ultimately no preferred, or "canon" choice, regarding on who the default true Original Owner is.

Eventually, the Hero does become able to revert back to his original human form, but if they so choose, they can always revert back to their other appearance, with the blessing of the Original Owner, by going to the local Church, with also the option to re-add Demonic features once they are expurged during the story. Thanks to a powerful spell casted on them by Galapagod, even when the Hero regains their human look, the people they had met while in the body of the chosen Original Owner, will still be able to recognize them, regardless of which visage they'll currently have.

The Original Owner reappered one last time to assist the Hero in their battle against Nelgel at Temple Raydamethes, before disappearing into the afterlife, just asking them to resolve their unfinished business.

Said unfinished businesses left behind by the Original Owners are then resolved in an optional sidequest, with each one of the possible Original Owners having their own associated one, with only the Wetling and Ogre Original Owners sharing the same final sidequest. Each one of these sidequests can be technically completed with the Hero having chosen any of the available races, meaning that they are available for everyone, but only upon finishing the corresponding chosen Original Owner's sidequest, so for example completing the sidequest associated with the Poppet Original Owner having previously chosen to reincarnate as a Poppet, an extra cutscene, giving closure to said Original Owner, is played; furthermore, the Hero will be rewarded the Seeds of dream realization, an important item necessary to complete another major sidestory involving a world made of dreams and a final battle against Nokturnus, "Dream version-What comes from the nightmare".

Appearance[]

Just like with the Hero, the Original Owner's name and appearance are completely dependent on the player.
