The party of Dragon Quest VIII, sometimes referred by Trode as "his trusty men", is the group of people who began journeying the world in pursuit of Dhoulmagus, initially in order to dispel the curse placed on King Trode, Princess Medea and entire Castle Trodain, but eventually became a massive quest to seek retribution for the dark jester's ever increasingly bloody crimes, until it became clear that the true mastermind behind these events was none other than Lord Rhapthorne himself; once the latter resurrected himself and threatened the entire world, the party had no choice but to confront the ancient evil invader.

Members[]

  • The Hero- A promising guard of Castle Trodain, the young man was once found as a child by the likewise young Medea, suffering from both a strong fever and amnesia; nursed back to health by the princess, and growing up together as close childhood friends, the Hero, now a member of the castle guards, was mysteriously the only survivor, beside King Trode and Medea themselves, who was not affected by the curse which had befallen Trodain after the theft of the sceptre by Dhoulmagus.
    • Munchie- The pet mouse of the Hero; far more intelligent and long-lived than any average mouse, this Cheese loving critter hid far more than anyone of the party, especially the Hero himself, could ever predict.
  • Yangus- A former bandit, the tough and crude but surprisingly soft-hearted Yangus tried to go straight, but after falling on hard times, he resorted to one last robbery; said robbery happened to be against the Hero, and the now cursed Trode and Medea, with Yangus accidentally almost killing himself when he carelessly smashed the bridge they were on. Saved by an act of mercy from the Hero, Yangus swore to support his Guv until the very end of his quest, although he often bickered with Trode.
  • Jessica Albert- The magically gifted daughter of the Albert family of Alexandria, Jessica was grief-stricken when her older brother, Alistair, was murdered. Initially incorrectly assuming that the Hero to be culprit, after the misunderstanding was cleared, Jessica, now bent on revenge on Dhoulmagus, defied her worried mother and began tracking down the jester, eventually joining the party at Port Prospect.
  • Angelo- A Templar knight of Maella Abbey, suave, libertine but overall noble Angelo was an orphan from a noble family that was raised by Abbot Francisco when he lost his parents, despite the constant abuse his older half-brother Marcello, who despised him due to his birth unwittingly causing ruin for him and his mother and was also an higher-ranking templar, inflicted upon him. When Francisco was slain by Dhoulmagus, Angelo joined the party to both get revenge, and to get away from his abusive sibling, who had furthermore, began to fall into darkness after the death of the Abbot.
  • Morrie- The eccentric owner of the Monster Arena, the passionate Morrie Mozzarella was made an optional party member in the 3DS version, opting to travel with the party and support their quest once they defeated him in a monster battle in the Rank S match of his arena.
  • Red- An old acquaintance and mutual love-interest of Yangus, Red, a business-woman with more than one shady deal under the counter, was initially bitter towards the former bandit due to a broken promise made by him. When she came into possession of the stolen Wagon and, more importantly, Medea, Red somewhat forced Yangus to keep his promise, although she had also planned to return the horse had Yangus properly apologized. Unlike the original release, after meeting the group again at Captain Crow's old Pirate's Cove, in the 3DS version, Red decided to follow the party in their quest, knowing that they would lead her to even more treasures.
  • Trode- The King of Trodain castle, Trode, now cursed in the form of a diminutive Troll-like creature, became the coachman of the wagon when he, his daughter and the Hero, began to chase after Dhoulmagus. While a non-combatant, despite his hidden talent with the sword, Trode, with his royal knowledge assisted the party many times, particularly by fixing the Alchemy Pot, although his bossy and haughty personality sometimes rubbed the others in bad-ways, particularly Yangus. Still Trode had a good heart, and a boundless love and dedication for Medea, being surprisingly open minded when it came to defy old traditions.
  • Medea- The cursed princess of Castle Trodain, Medea, in her horse form, willingly pulled the wagon for the group, gladly assisting them in any small amount. Kind and humble, Medea was particularly caring towards the Hero, his old childhood friend, never asking more than being sometimes brought to the Mystical Spring, which magic waters were able to briefly dispel the curse and allow her to talk with the group.

Additionally, after proving himself in Morrie's Monster Arena, the Hero received the ability to call for up to two groups of monsters to assist the party in battle. Said groups, composed by previously recruited Infamous Monsters, could only be called once each for battle, but had devastating effects when used correctly. Also, the sprit of Empyrea's deceased child, willingly loaned his power to the party, allowing thanks to his solidified form, the Godbird's soulstone, the group to take flight, directly rescuing the party in a couple of occasions, and later on from Empyrea herself during their final fight with the Lord of Darkness.

Two other characters briefly joined the party as guest party members, although they were far from being allies with the group:

  • Prince Charmles- The spoiled-rotten crown prince of Argonia, Charmles was accompanied by the party in his coming-of-age ceremony at the Royal Hunting Ground, where he should have defeated, even with someone else's help a Argon lizard and retrieved its Argon Heart. Instead, the near useless Charmles was completely unable to do anything, even straight up fleeing from battle at the first chance, all the while treating everyone badly, especially Medea and Trode, his bride-to-be and in-law father unbeknownst to him, earning their bitter loathing.
  • Marcello- The now fallen from grace Marcello, once a big thorn in the side of the heroes, decided to aid the group in their confrontation against Juggerwroth, although only to repay the life-debt he had towards his hated half-brother Angelo. After Juggerwroth was defeated for good, Marcello once again departed, never to be seen again.

Being already familiar with the sacred bird, Yangus and Jessica were the only ones who initially were aware on the identity of who transported the otherworldly visitors to Arba's dimension, as well as their purpose to stop the magical anomaly, although not even Empyrea was initially able to identify Velasco as its origin.

When The Seven realms faced a crisis due to Fractos's machinations, Empyrea once again summoned otherworldly heroes to assist the local warriors, Lazarel, Teresa, Cesar and Desdemona. This time, Empyrea chose to summon again Jessica, but also transported Angelo. Once again, all of the otherworldly heroes, including Jessica and Angelo, were returned back to their original worlds once the danger was vanquished.

Yangus also re-appears, but he is only playable during the multiplayer dungeon exploration, not the story mode.
