Poison is a status effect that causes the afflicated character to take minor damage on each turn during battle, and every few steps on the map screen.

In Dragon Quest IX, if a player is poisoned, but the poison is nether cured nor takes the player's life before the end of the battle, it will fade to a lesser poisoning state in which it will no longer do damage per turn in battle.

Poison can be lifted using an Antidotal herb (or one of its variants), Squelch, or by requesting purification at a church.
