Quad is a character in Dragon Quest X. Quad had a great deal of loyalty towards his kingdom, the Great Etene Island, and when that kingdom faced an impending catastrophe, Quad unfortunately made a long list of morally corrupt decisions in order to save it, such as the assassination of Empress Ulta's father, which brought many tragedies, even more so to Quad himself, who ended up deeply regretting his terrible choices.

Dragon Quest X[]
A 5000-Year Journey to a Faraway Hometown[]
Quad is the son of King Dominius, and the younger brother of Mereade. He and his sister lost their mother at a young age, and were neglected and often abused by their father, who lashed out at them due to his own inferiority complex towards his brother, Padre. Seeing his father and the subjects of the kingdom as overly dependent on the power to see through time, Quad trained and studied to improve himself, wanting to solve any problems through his own strength. He often asked Padre to train him in swordfighting, looking up to him as a father-figure.
The Hero's first encounter with Quad was when they accidentally teleported inside the Dominius family manor 5000 years in the past with the Time-Trotter's Trinket. Quad accused the Hero of being an assassin sent to kill him and Mereade, and immediately detained them while confiscating the Trinket.
About 6 months after this incident, Padre went missing, Dominius ascended to the throne as the next king of the Ethene Kingdom, and Quad's family moved out of the family manor into the royal palace floating above the Royal City of Kimbel. Quad, now as the prince of the kingdom, was assigned as commander of Kimbel's Royal Army. during this time, he met Dianji and Zagulf, who were ridiculed by others for their shortcomings, but seeing the potential hidden within them, Quad took them in as his personal retainers.
The Hero's next encounter with Quad came when he led a group of Kimbel soldiers to arrest the time guideline enforcer Belma, who had been abusing her authority to harass and terrorize the citizens. The Hero delivers a memory crystal entrusted to them by Mereade to Quad, and the two of them watch the recording within. In the recording, Mereade asks Quad to work with the Hero to fix the relay gate connecting Kimbel to the royal palace, and to come find her afterwards. Quad is confused, wondering how Mereade knew the relay gate was broken when it had only just occurred. Trusting his sister's words, Quad joins the Hero in repairing the relay gate, which had been sabotaged with the use of an elaborate device that trapped anyone that used it inside a pocket dimension, and the pair finally reaches the royal palace.
Later, when the Hero investigated the Royal Alchemia and found evidence that Dominius was responsible for the creation of Hexabeasts that were terrorizing the countryside and even attacked Quad's aunt Marone, Quad confronted his father and accused him of causing harm to the nation he is supposed to be protecting. Dominius responds by presenting his own evidence that contradicts Quad's, then accuses the Hero of trying to manipulate Quad in an attempt to overthrow the kingdom, throwing them in prison and planning to have them executed. On the day of the execution, however, thanks to a plan concocted by Mereade, the Hero manages to escape, along with help from Dianji and Farras. When Dominius tries to stop the Hero, Quad steps in, deftly disarming his father, believing in the Hero's innocence, and tells them to escape. Dianji creates a wall of fire between Quad and Dominius, saying that father and son should not be forced to fight each other, but Dominius calmly steps through the flames, revealing that he is actually a mechanical automaton pretending to be him.
After Quad and the Hero defeat the automaton Dominius, Quad finds the Timeseer Key on its body, the symbol of the king that grants access to the Timeseer Temple beneath the palace. Quad asks the Hero to accompany him to uncover the truth behind all of these strange events, and inside the Timeseer Temple, they find Mereade hooked up to a strange device that is siphoning her energy into the Ethene Kingdom's treasure, the Timeseer Box. Quad releases Mereade from the machine, and is confronted by the real Dominius, who demands Quad place Mereade back inside. Dominius explains that he had the Hexabeasts created to harvest psychic energy from the people of Ethene to feed the Timeseer Box so that he could see further into the future and find a way to solidify his legacy as the greatest ruler in Ethene's history. Disgusted with his ego and his willingness to kill his own daughter for this goal, Quad declares that Dominius is not his father, but a monster, and swears to kill him and bring peace back to Ethene. Dominius uses the Timeseer Box's power to transform into a demon and knocks Quad unconscious while the Hero battles him. After Dominius' defeat, Dominius is unexpectedly killed by Padre, who then commands the Timeseer Box to run wild. The royal palace is swarmed by Hexabeasts, and as Quad regains consciousness, he attempts to crawl towards Mereade in an attempt to protect her. Just then, the entire palace is caught in a massive timeleap, which leads to Quad and Mereade being separated, sent to different time periods.
Meeting the Hero's Sibling[]
Quad was sent 2000 years into the future from the time of the Ethene Kingdom, ending up on the Dwarven continent of Dwachakka. Not long after, Quad encountered the Hero's sibling, who had also been sent through time, though he was not aware of their relationship to the Hero. After bringing them to a cave for shelter, the two of them talked about their circumstances, and after learning they had both been sent through time against their wills, vowed to find a way to return to their proper times. As a symbol of this vow, Quad changed his name to Guryan Rush, which he said was an ancient Ethenean phrase that meant, "return to that day".
Quad and the Hero's sibling combined their talents to work their way into the good graces of the Ulbea Underground Empire: Quad with his quick thinking and innovative solutions to problems, and the sibling with their deep knowledge of Ethenean alchemy. Quad eventually became an advisor to Emperor Ja Kuba, and the sibling became the lead researcher of the Empire Tech Agency. With access to Ulbea's resources, the two planned to create a pair of time-travel devices to achieve their goals of returning home. However, over the next 10 years, they were met with constant setbacks and failures, and eventually learned that in order to complete the devices, they would need a rare metal called Boronudium, which was the closely-guarded national treasure of the neighboring kingdom of Gateria, which Ulbea was currently engaged in small-scale territorial skirmishes with. Around this time, Quad had been researching what had happened to the Ethene Kingdom, and was horrified to learn that not long after his disappearance from that time, the entire kingdom would be destroyed by sinking into the ocean due to a depletion of geo-energy. This knowledge, coupled with the dread of still not knowing the fate of his sister Mereade, became too much for Quad to bear, and drove him to commit a terrible act.
The night before Ulbea and Gateria were to sign a peace treaty with each other, Quad assassinated Emperor Ja Kuba, pinning the blame on Gateria's prince, Byan Dao, and using it as justification to declare all-out war against Gateria. Shortly after Ja Kuba's death, Quad had the Hero's sibling locked away in a research lab, saying they were not focusing enough on the completion of the time-travel devices, the Time-Trotter's Trinkets. After the sibling learned what Quad had done, the two of them argued, which led to Quad pointing out that the sibling had stopped aging, and that the two of them valued their time very differently. Every time they encountered a setback in completing the Time-Trotter's Trinkets, not once did the sibling ever complain or express any frustration, instead only saying, "Someday, it will work out". Being told over the past 10 years to continue being patient - by someone who appeared to have all the time in the world for themselves - inadvertently added fuel to the fire that led to Quad's descent into despair, and he decided that he could no longer afford to wait, saying he would save his homeland no matter how many sins he had to commit to do so.
Demonic Empire of the Sands[]
With Emperor Ja Kuba's death, Quad effectively took control of the Ulbea Empire, and focused all its efforts and resources on military technology to wage war with Gateria to obtain the Boronudium needed to complete the Time-Trotter's Trinkets. He earned the trust of Ja Kuba's daughter, Princess Ulta, by telling her that completing the Time-Trotter's Trinkets would allow her to travel back in time to prevent her father's death, but this was a lie, as only Etheneans have the power to travel through time. Quad had the Empire Tech Agency construct an ultimate weapon, the Ulbea Colossus, which was powered by a crystal made from Dwachakka's own geo-energy. Quad's plan for the Colossus was two-fold: first, it would be used to destroy Gateria to bring a swift end to the war and quickly secure the Boronudium. Second, after the Time-Trotter's Trinkets were completed, he would take the Colossus' core with him back to his time to replenish Ethene's geo-energy and prevent it from sinking into the ocean.
The Hero would meet the now grown-up Quad in the Empire Tech Agency after they traveled back to the time of Urbea to prevent the reactivation of the Colossus in the present day. By this time, Gateria had already been destroyed, and the Time-Trotter's Trinkets were almost complete. Quad, not knowing about the Hero's ability to freely travel through time, believed that they too had been flung through time when the Ethenean royal palace disappeared. When the Hero, along with Byan Dao's mentor Master Liu, revealed that Quad was Ja Kuba's true killer, he had the Hero and Liu imprisoned as he took Princess Ulta with him to the restricted section of the Empire Tech Agency, where the Colossus was being stored. The Hero, with help from their sibling, was able to catch up with Quad as he was preparing to make the leap back to his time with the Colossus' core, but Quad summoned a group of Ulbean Aztech robots to hold them off. Just then, the Colossus' hangar is attacked by Padre, who then steals the core for himself before vanishing. The hangar begins to collapse, and the Hero's sibling vanishes after using the second Time-Trotter's Trinket to avoid being crushed, while Quad and the Hero are rescued by Ulta and Liu.
On the edge of the Sand Dam outside the Empire Tech Agency, Ulta confronts Quad and asks if he really was the one who killed her father, to which Quad confesses to, as well as lying to her about being able to use the Time-Trotter's Trinket and using her to wage war against Gateria for his own goals. Ulta tearfully prepares to execute Quad for his crimes, saying that she truly believed in him, while Quad says that now that he has no way to save Ethene, his dream is dead and he no longer has a reason to live, urging her to put him out of his misery. Ulta shoots Quad, knocking him off the edge of the dam and into the sea of quicksand below, with his last thoughts being of Mereade.
Journey to the Distant Future[]
When the Hero and Mereade return to the Ethene Kingdom in search of a way to enter the Time Labyrinth to confront Kyronos, they are surprised to find that Quad is there, alive and well. Quad explains that when he fell from the Sand Dam, the Time-Trotter's Trinket in his possession activated, and when he regained consciousness, he was back in the Ethene Kingdom. With nobody in Kimbel aware of what had transpired in the royal palace prior to its disappearance, Quad succeeded his late father as the new king of Ethene. His first order of business was to find Mereade, but after having searched the entire island with no sign of her, he shifted his attention to searching for another way to prevent the island's submersion, which was now being rocked by frequent earthquakes. With the help of Dianji and Zagulf, Quad learned that the cause of the island's geo-energy disappearing was a monster feeding on it deep underground, and devised a plan to lure the creature out to slay it. Mereade, who had been told what Quad did in Ulbea, expressed her disappointment in him, and was even reluctant to cooperate with him, but after convincing from Kyururu, changed her mind, and even told Quad that if they did manage to save Ethene from destruction, that she would forgive him. Quad promised that if Mereade and the Hero helped him save Ethene, he would do everything in his power to help them reach their goals.
After the Hero and Mereade defeat the monster, Quad joins them in heading to Made Temple, where the Ethenean royal family's greatest secret is kept, which would be the key to reaching the Time Labyrinth. There, they find Kyurex, one of the founders of the Ethene Kingdom. After helping Kyurex regain his powers, he reveals that the Ethene Kingdom is about to be destroyed again, this time by a giant meteorite. Kyurex explains that as the Ethene Kingdom has been avoiding its predestined destruction and molding history in its favor for the past 700 years, the distortions of time caused by this have coalesced into a massive, unavoidable calamity. Quad refuses to believe that all of his efforts up until now were for nothing, and angrily storms off, returning to Kimbel.
Not long after, just as Kyurex predicted, the meteorite appeared above Kimbel, threatening to destroy not only the city, but the entire island. Quad, in utter disbelief, is about to drop to his knees in defeat, until Mereade slaps him back to his senses, telling him that there's still a way to stop it by using the Eternal Ring, the sculpture located at the center of the city. As Mereade prepares to activate the Eternal Ring, Kyronos appears, unleashing a horde of Hexabeasts on the city, and attempting to kill Mereade. Quad climbs atop the Eternal Ring and deflects a volley of light spears aimed at her, then leaps at Kyronos, stabbing his sword into its body. Kyronos quickly retaliates, impaling Quad with a cluster of spears, sending him plummeting to the ground below.
After the Eternal Ring is activated, the meteorite's descent is slowed immensely (to where it would take another 100 years for it to hit the ground), and as the fighting in the city died down, Quad was taken to the Royal Army's headquarters. The Hero and Mereade find him grievously injured, his skin now a sickly pale complexion. He asks Mereade if the meteorite is gone, and Mereade, seeing that her brother doesn't have long to live, lies to Quad, saying that Ethene is finally safe, and that she forgives him for what he had done. Quad weeps, finally admitting that he knew what he did in Urbea was wrong, and was afraid to tell Mereade about it. Mereade says that no matter what, she is still his sister, and can never truly hate him. Quad then musters the last of his strength to give his Time-Trotter's Trinket to her, saying that Ethene's future is now in her hands, and apologizes for leaving her all alone before finally succumbing to his injuries.
Quad's Final Gift[]
After the Hero defeats Kyronos, Mereade, still in the Ethene Kingdom of the past, uses Kyurex's ship to transport the entire island and everyone on it through time to the present day (at the cost of losing her time travel powers and turning her hair white), where Kyururu is able to use the Eternal Ring to undo the destruction of the world. Afterwards, the Hero aids the friends they made in Kimbel as they prepare to create a new future for themselves in the present. One of these quests involves helping Mereade look for the Timeseer's Key, which had gone missing after Quad's death.
After finding the missing key, the captain of the Royal Guard learns that Mereade intends to bury it inside a memorial for the fallen and angrily confronts Mereade, believing she wishes to abolish the monarchy of Ethene. Just then, Mereade's Time-Trotter's Trinket begins to glow and Quad's voice can be heard from it, asking Mereade to lead Ethene into a new future. The Trinket turns into a light that covers Mereade, restoring her hair to its original color before vanishing completely. Mereade then explains to the captain that burying the Timeseer's Key is her way of respecting Quad's final wish for the people of Ethene to live their lives without depending on the Timeseer Box, to which the captain agrees and apologizes for his rude behavior.
