Dragon Quest Wiki

This is a list of monsters that can be recruited in Dragon Quest VIII, known as Infamous Monsters, and used in the Monster Arena as part of the Hero's monster team. It aims to describe details of the locations, species, nickname(s) and viability of each monster listed. Furthermore, distinguishing between the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo 3DS versions. In the original release, there were a total of 77 Infamous Monsters; however, the 3DS version later added 23 new monsters, resulting in a new total of 100 Infamous Monsters.

Notes[]

Starting Out[]

In order to be able to recruit monsters, the party first has to speak to Morrie at Morrie's Place on the way to Pickham from Ascantha; he will task the party with recruiting 3 monsters: Smiles, Lonely Joe and Squiggles. Upon doing so, after being formally introduced to the Monster Arena, the Hero is free to recruit other monsters to their Monster Team.

Recruiting[]

  • Only specific monsters can be recruited, and they are known as Infamous Monsters. These Infamous Monsters are identified by different means depending on the version of the game:
    • In the PS2 version they appear as the only roaming encounters, as in both dungeons and the field map, monster encounters are randomly generated and invisible.
    • In the 3DS version, where monster encounters are visible, they have a word bubble above their head containing two orange crossed swords in order to distinguish them; they are also visible from much farther away unlike the other standard encounters.
  • Infamous Monsters must first be defeated in order to recruit them.
  • Recruited monsters do not level up like normal party members, instead their statistics scale with the level of the Hero, resulting in them progressively growing more powerful.

Teams[]

  • Reserve Teams and an additional Monster Team can be unlocked as rewards for beating certain ranked battles at the Monster Arena, allowing the ownership of even more monsters.
  • Unlike other titles were monsters can be recruited and used in battle, such as Dragon Quest V or Dragon Quest VI, Infamous Monsters cannot be equipped with any type of weapon, armour, or accessory.
  • Recruited monsters can be switched between the Monster Teams and Reserve Teams at any time and released at any time.
  • If there is no room left when adding a newly recruited monster, an owned monster needs to be released in order to add it to the team or the new monster needs to be let go.
  • When a recruited monster is released in the wild, they will return to their original location, and have to be defeated again in order to reclaim them, with no further repercussions.

Combat[]

  • Not every Infamous Monster can be considered a viable option for battle on their own, and some could even be considered as near useless joke monsters; however these joke characters usually show their true potential if they are organized in the right Teams.
  • After clearing Rank E in the Monster Arena, the Hero unlocks the Call Team ability and, when used in battle, can select a Monster Team to fight in place of the party for at least three turns.
  • The only way to resurrect dead monsters is by talking to Morrie at the Monster Arena.
  • After defeating an Infamous Monster for the first time one Monster Coin is rewarded. These coins sole purpose is, on paper, to be sold for Gold if one so chooses, but they can also be an effective indirect way to keep track of the total number of Infamous Monsters defeated.
    • There are three tiers of Monster Coins, which indicate the overall strenght of the defeated monster; from lowest to highest: copper, silver and gold, each tier with an increasing sell value of 200 gold, 500 gold, and finally 1000 gold. In the 3DS version, with a total of 100 Infamous Monsters, there are 47 Copper Monster Coins, 32 Silver Monster Coins, and 21 Gold Monster Coins, in total.

Other Information[]

  • Some monsters can only be found & recruited after beating certain ranks at the Monster Arena, or after defeating the final boss and seen one of the endings.
  • Some Infamous Monsters can have multiple different locations where they can appear; if that is the case, the only guaranteed way to track them down is to check each location until they are found.
  • There are Special Teams that are formed when certain monsters are present in the Battle Team, which offer various perks and sometimes special abilities known as Deathmoves.
